I have the opportunity to get a 5.7 hemi out of a 2004 truck with about 125,000, pretty much easy miles. It has one bad lifter, but the customer wants a new engine. I want to know how someone would build it that has done it before or knows someone who has. Bore/stroke, power adders, part brands, etc.... Also, what kind of power am I looking at depending what I do. Is it worth it to build? Also, i do no have anything to put it in. I do not know if I should put it in a ram or go another route. I am currently doing an LS3 swap into a '64 Chevelle. So, I am kind of leaning towards an older muscle car.

Thanks

I think this would be a good candidate for a stroker kit.

My MOPAR mind says this wild be a great swap into almost any mid 60's to mid 70's Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth B-Body (Charger, Satellite, Fury, Savoy...) platform. Maybe even a Dart body with some firewall mods.

Rough specs on this would be:

Displacement 370 cu. in. (6059 cu. cm)
Bore x Stroke 4.06 in. x 3.58 in. (103.0 x 90.9)
Compression 10.3:1

If you are interested in forced induction for this motor, don't use stock internals. Anything above 6psi eventually damages the ring lands and could cause possible cylinder wall damage.

If you decide to go forward, look at shophemi.com for parts. You may want to talk to HighHorse Performance out of Delaware. Josh builds some awesome engines and has stroker kits available.

All depends on how much money you wanna spend. I built my own stroker and I don’t think you will be able to build a good reliable stroker for less then 4 grand, and that’s totally in the low side. What budget are you working with?

Those specs are for a 6.1 engine, not an 04 5.7. His specs stock would be 3.917 bore with a 3.58 stroke for 345 ci. It’s not really recommended to bore it out anymore then .030, and if you do have a block that’s tested good enough to go bigger you’ll be looking at custom pistons

I said it was for a 6.1L stroker, not the 5.7L stock dimensions.

Ok. I don’t think anyone has been able to bore a 5.7 out to a 6.1, the walls are way too thin to be worth the trouble. Easiest way is just go with a 392 kit with a longer stroke

If i stick with stock heads, probably put better valve spings in, and just with the stroker kit...how much power am i looking at? I'd assume around 430-450?

That might be close, that’s what my truck has right now, stock heads and custom stroker cam. After all that I’m alittle underwhelmed with the power, and I feel like it’s mainly held back by the small heads. I would suggest trying to find a set of 09+ 5.7 heads. Just bolting them on will raise the compression way up, so plan ahead and get a dished piston to lower the compression ratio. I went with a -1.5 flat top and wished I would have went with a -14 or so dished. Now I’m going to need a thick head gasket to bring it down to around 10.8. I’m going full blown and adding an 09+ truck intake manifold as well and see how that works. The only issue is getting headers since the newer heads have a D shaped exhaust port while the old heads have a square port. But since you are considering retrofitting into an older car you might have a better option or just use some shorties 2bf3a4190d25f353658340213584d010.jpg

I did 392 stroker on my 08 Charger R/T.

5.7 block: honed, decked, magnafluxed and given a once over
Inertia 392 stroker kit (minus throttle body, heads and torque converter)
09+ Eagle heads: ported, polished and larger valves port matched to JBA longtube headers (catless FTW)
6.1 intake manifold: ported, polished and port matched to heads
BBK 90mm TB

Got 490 RWHP/485 RWTQ.

Those are pretty good numbers, definitely makes it worth it to get these eagle heads installed. Did you run his cam as well?

Yeah, it was a Spartan Plus I believe.

I was hoping to hit the magical 500 RWHP number, but there wasn't any left in it unless I solely wanted to use it at the track. The way it was built, I daily drove this beast until I sold it . . . and got back about what I put into it (around $20K).

It ran very low 11s, almost cracked 10s on 93 octane full weight and Mickey Thompson E/Ts.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I really want to spring for the 6.1 manifold cause they look awesome, but they are too damn expensive. I’m going to try the eagle truck intake and see how it runs, maybe upgrade to the 6.1 later

You can definitely get an Eagle intake fairly easily and not cost a heap. It’s what most of the LX community has done in lieu of (or waiting on) getting a 6.1 until they become available.

That being said, get on to the LX (“Z” or otherwise sites) and get into the for sale/classified sections and I’m sure you’ll find what you seek.
