I just bought a 2012 ram 1500 with the 5.7L, it's all factory right now but I want to put an exhaust on it and I was wondering if the exhaust would sound funny when it goes in to economy mode on 4 cyliders? And what is the best exhaust in your opinion?

Yes, it does... it may not drone depending on the type / brand you get but it will definitely sound "different"... just do what most of us do and get a tuner to shut MDS off... no sound issues and a much livelier driving experience...

You can uninstall the tuner if you have to bring the truck back to the dealership for warranty work.

Or you can just bump the select shift down into 6th gear and leave MDS on for when you want the extra few MPGs. That's what I do

This is what I do put it in 6th. Problem solved.

Ive got one of the loudest Rams Ive heard, and I don't notice anything when driving around in 4 cyl mode. Sounds SLIGHTLY different, but not much, and certainly not annoying.

Guys that find it annoying either font drive hard enough or don't like moderately loud music lol

^^ exactly.
 Welcome to RF!

There are a whole bunch of exhaust discussion threads (i.e. please learn/use the RF search function) discussing muffler options, keeping or deleting resonators etc. You Tube is also full of exhaust sound clips for the RAMs.

There is warranty risk associated with a tuner. You can probably reset to stock and not get hassled, but tuners do leave a flash record, so if you develop PCM problems down the road, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act isn't going to protect you.

As stated above, you don't have to turn MDS off with a tuner, just put your auto shift in 6 and MDS won't crash your party. The tranny will still progress through the gears on its own, but you'll stay with 8 cylinders firing.
You can also select tow haul mode and get firmer shifts at higher RPM shift-points.

MDS is a wonderful thing for fuel economy on the freeway in cruise control. The rest of the time it can be a pain in the @$$, causing hesitation and lugging when you need gitty-up and go.

If it's a 2012 how much warrant do you have left?

I don't mind the sound when it kicks in. Doesn't bother me so I left it on for the slightly better mpg lol.

I also use the gear selector like others here. When it hits a certain RPM with MDS, its just an odd sound with my magnaflow catback. Almost like a light muffled popping. Not too unbearable, but id rather not hear it.

I have a flowmaster on my 11 6 speed, here's a video of MDS kicking in at around 25 mph in the city. I don't care for it so I leave it in tow mode in the city to turn MDS off. I leave it on the highway cause it doesn't bother me there https://vimeo.com/147683313

I drove almost 4 hours the other day round trip to Katy & back from my house at had cruise on 65,I reset average mpg backing out of my driveway, and by the time I was pulling back in my average was over 26 mpg in my 8 speed,I didn't notice any better mileage when i had 4 banger mode before I had it tuned out like 6 months ago.

My new to me 2012 with MDS is a 6spd. I want to understand how you mean this. So when it's in D I can bump the stick+ or - and I will see what gear on EVIC screen. This will initiate MDS and give benefit of "ECO"?

I've been experiencing the motor seems to shake. I've experienced this in other vehicle and it's usually the motor mounts are worn. Truck has 38K on clock so my question would be. Do motor mounts fail on these trucks? Am I just experiencing the nature of the Hemi MDS experience. I'm planning on taking this certified truck in and this is on my list.
Secondly would out or round tires or wheel/tires that need indexing give this truck a bumpy ride. I let done air out and it seems improved. The TPM system is sometimes inaccurate. Hopefully someone will respond. I've posted on this forum with never any sensible responses. Anybody?

shaking while at idle? or shaking under power? or both?

could have maybe had the plugs serviced or they could need servicing and it could be a misfire

In both instances...idling and accelerating. A better set of ears listening to the changes that seemed to be the MDS switch but a few of the shakes illicited..."that doesn't sound good". Skipping due to spark plugs is something I will explore with dealer tech. A certified vehicle I see on the check sheet plugs are good. Does that mean they were visually inspected. Several items I've discovered from the CPO list were in need of R/R so their check off means nothing.
After reading other comments about "engine behaviors" when going from 8 to 4 to 8 modes I can influence the "ECO" alert in many different ways with speeds up to 70 and beyond. Tapping the (+) initiates "ECO"...pretty cool. My gas mileage went from 13.4 to 14.2. So yes some of it is 4-8-4 maybe but there is something else. Thx for the comment
