Neat idea over at Ford (yes, it can happen). They have created a system where they program in the payload capacity and then use sensors to calculate how much weight has been added to the truck. There are 4 lights in the taillight lenses that progressively light up as you get to max weight and then the top light blinks if payload capacity is exceeded. I only saw a article on Jalopnik so my post is not detailed as to how it works. But a nice idea nonetheless.

Oh boy. We'll have real problems id they start putting it on all trucks. If payload wasn't an important number then why would they be doing this?

Maybe all of the redundant towing questions will stop now. Maybe RV dealers and Truck salesman will have to understand the process more.

But manufactures will sure make many warranty claims denied

GVWR minus Payload equals Base weight

GCWR minus Base weight equals max towing.

Max towing minus driver minus hitch equals max trailering. (Tongue weight added must remain under GVWR/GRAWR)

Actual towing is Max Trailering minus passengers/cargo(driver/passengers/cargo/ hitch/tongue weight must remain under GVWR/GRAWR)

Also, tongue weight must remain under the capacity of the hitch...usually 1200lbs with WDH for 1500.

It is that simple.

Now their will be no mistaking when you hit GVWR

Maybe that is their point? Trying to deny warranty claims on steering, brake, or suspension repairs if they detect that sensor has been tripped?

Now the payload police are right in the taillights.

Just trying to let people who have never towed know the safe capacities of their truck.

It is fun to be labeled.

They can already do that. The problem being...there is no explanation given to new owners and that is an out. They can not possibly make a person go to a scale with every load.

But...know they have their out. Just look at your taillight. You are denied.
