I followed the DIY posted by Demon-Hemi and used everything he did. It didnt come out terrible, I suppose it could be worse, but the job isn't as perfect as I hoped it would be (I'm a bit of a perfectionist). I sanded at the end for like 15 mins to get rid of the orange peel, but didnt want to go through the clear coat. And then used compund 3 different round for about 20 mins. It doesn't look exactly right to me though, It's not super shiny and glossy like I feel it should be. What do y'all think, what went wrong? Not enough sanding at end, to much sanding, Not enough clear coat? And can I fix this job. I'd like to try it again so I can master the VHT NiteShades so I can do my tails.

It almost looks like you sprayed the clear a little to late
If you sprayed enough coats you can wetsad it out but it'll take awhile
While you wetsand the light will get hazy and the bright spots are your low spots

What grit did you use and what kind of polish?

How far between the last coat of VHT and the clear did you wait?
Often a non-glossy clear is caused by chemical reactions between paint (or VHT) that has set too much, but not fully set before the clear was sprayed.

Doesn't look like you put enough clear or wetsanded enough. So let the clear you have now fully cure(usually 7 days) then sand with 600 grit. Then recoat with atleast 3 coats of clear and let that dry for atleast 48hrs then you can wetsand. Start off with 1000, then 1500, then 2000, and finally 2500 or 3000. The 1000 grit is the real work is done taking the peel down so don't be scared that you're gonna burn through the the clear. Use lots of water!! You can tell how smooth it is by the way the water "sticks" to a good smooth finish making it look glossy and it'll run off the peel. If that makes any sense?

I probably waited around 10-15 mins after the VHT. I thought you were supposed to wait. Should I have clear coated almost immediately? And I did 2 heavy coats of the clear. Then Used 2000 grit. I wetsanded for what I thought was a while, and was worried I may burn through the clear. And lastly I used the Meguiars Compound(3 different rounds) like Demon used in the DIY.

Okay TylerB, I will try to correct this in a week. Makes a bit of sense but I'm a little confused. Are you saying that I will be done sanding (and ready to polish) if the water sticks to the surface, or if it runs off the surface and doesn't stick?

No, I just use that as a reference when I'm sanding with the 1000 and when that's almost completely gone I move on to the finer grit paper.

You would have to sand a long time with just 2000 if you have bad orange peel so try what I said with 1000.
