I have a 2004 Ram with 5.8 Hemi.
Book calls for PH-16
A Fram ph8a has the same size seal, and the same size thread.
The ph8a is 30% larger, and the same price.
I see no reason for not using a ph8a, and a very good reason for using one.
I have seen this same issue in Hondas and Toyotas. I suspect is is because of fit issues in certain applications.
Anyone know why a PH-8A would not be equal to or better?

While I can’t answer your question on why a PH-8A would not be equal to or better than a PH-16, I can offer some observations.

Different oil filters by the same manufacturer, even those of the same size, can have different filtration pressures and rates, and bypass valve opening pressures. They can also have different burst strengths.

No matter what brand you use (please don’t ask what the best oil filter is.......), I would suggest using the one that is specified for your engine.

If you have room, it'll work. However, I'd recommend the WIX 51515XP.

I dont know a lot about oil filters. I know Fram has been around forever. Why do you recommend WIX?

Something something... volume affecting oil pressure. Read a decent technical write up about just this topic. Sticking with OE size recommended.

WIX Oil Filters have been a Top Brand in most Testing done

Even Stellantis which is Dodge is using WIX filters, they use them on certain vehicles, then they pack them in their own boxes.

right up until 2024 ...
