Hello all, i have a friend with a 2011 4.7 mounted to a (i think 5sp?) and just recently he’s come to complain to me because i have the same engine about engine tapping. I took a listen and it only happens when cold, and it doesn’t sound like a lifter gone bad. I asked the history and he told me that he had a check engine light for the EGR valve around 3-4 years ago but it went away and he never thought to replace it because it’s a pain to do even though he bought it. It’s also having performance issues when warm, as it seems to (i don’t know how to explain this) lose HP and hesitate? I haven’t dealt with something like this before, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

More news on this subject, he told me he hasn’t gotten his spark plugs done and his truck has 98K on it, and the sound goes away fully when warm.

98K on the plugs, makes me wonder about all the maintenance, especially the oil changes? I've read a lot about ticking engines all over these forums and it seems many times that switching to really good oil is the fix. Try Burla, he seems to have done the hard work for us in the realm of oils.
BTW: can't resist this---"just asking for friend, you know..." Har! Just joking, too good to pass up.

Had 2 Rams with 4.7, 5speed and 392 gears. Both ran very good. Had intake, exhaust and programmer on my 2006 and it ran mid 15s in quarter mile. Have to change plugs at 30,000. They tend to get moisture or some whitish color condensation on oil filler cap. I used synthetic and changed every 4,000 miles. Sold it with 80,000 miles. At about 50,000 had slight piston slap noise in gear only when cold. The coating wears off pistons and they have a short piston skirt which causes a little noise when cold. It's the piston rocking back and forth at the bottom of the cylinder wall and will not cause any harm. When it reaches about one quarter on the guage the noise goes away. My hemi does the same thing. Just drive easy till it warms up. Also use seafoam to keep motor clean. A catch can would also be a good idea. I have seen those motors go over 200,000 miles with out any work. Wish they still made them.

I really wish they still made them too. My 4.7 (2013) has 423K on it and the only issue she’s had is exhaust manifold bolts that was gonna be a given to bad. I run MMO in the gas tank, and honestly, she still runs like brand new. I hope i can get my friends sorted out so his can last as long too.

That's a lot of miles, how is the transmission holding up? I have a 83 Malibu I bought 13 years ago as I was driving 500 miles a week to work before I retired. also took a lot of trips thats why I have had 3 Rams since 2005. I have 330,000 on the Malibu. Original motor, trans and rear. Still have it and drive it mostly in winter because in NJ they use a lot of salt and brine and don't want to drive my truck in that crap. This year hasn't been bad, only had snow twice and it was gone in a few days. Have 103,000 on my 2011 Ram and plan on keeping it for a while. Only problem was a anti-lock wheel speed sensor went bad, $20 part. Had a lot of Ford and Chevy trucks and Ram's are the best. My son has a 2016 Big Horn and had a 2014 before that. He uses then for his busisness and puts over 40,000 miles a year.

The original 65RFE is holding up just fine and shifting like a dream still. I’ve done tranny fluid changes every 30K miles, Oil changes every 3K, and change the air filter every 5-7K and the spark plugs at every 30K.

And that’s really awesome that you have 330K on a malibu, as now you couldn’t get 50K out of a malibu without catastrophic failure as they’re just not built how they used to be. The new EcoTec engines are horrible

It's all in the maintainance. Everyone says I waste a lot of money but oil, trans fluid, grease and plugs cost a lot less than a new truck. Every vehicle I have owned has had almost 200,000 on each and 2 of them were Ford trucks. The only problems I have had was with cars that I raced. 2011 Ram has about 20 quarter mile passed on it. [email protected] best time with K&N drop in, flowmaster hd50 muffler with single exhaust and Flashpak tune. Have a fast Nova SS that I used to race but local track closed and nearest track is 2 hours away. Nova is something I do not want to drive that far and I have no trailer. All the cars I raced were street driven. Had 6 total over the years.
