Ya I have only ever seen diesel handles green. I was about to put diesel into my gas truck once but the nossle is also larger than a gas nossle so luckily it didn’t fit

Diesel pump handles are not always green but also stations don't always to use the diesel pump handles which are larger than the gasoline version.

Accidentally putting diesel in a gasser isn't as big of issue as gas in a common rail diesel. The HPFP in common rail diesels compress the fuel upwards of 30,000 psi and use the fuel for lubrication and cooling.

True that may be, I’ve slowed down since then, not near as distracted as I used to be. Tend to pay more attention now lol

Sorry to hear OP. FWIW we run a pretty decent sized fleet here and have pumps on site. Been a number a of instances of a fuel mix up, never have one of the diesel pickups been fatally wounded. Worst I can recall is having to replace some injectors. It will sting but not kill, good luck with the repairs hope you get your truck back safely.

I did something similar to an 04 Duramax when it was practically new. I only had 6 gallons in it when I realized it didn't smell like diesel fuel. I finished topping it off with diesel, another 18 gallons, and counting what was already in the tank, it diluted it enough to not cause a problem. I had a race car on a trailer when I did that, and never noticed a problem. I did stop when it got down to half tank and filled it up again, hopefully diluting it even more. The good thing is, you usually only do that once and you never forget...

putting gasoline in the tank is odd, putting DEF fluid is a special kind of dumb.

I should say that I add about 1/2 a gallon of diesel to a 20 gallon tank of gasoline. I swear my gasoline engine runs much better with 1/40th diesel. Im sure Im ruining my CAT but I just cant help myself, the feeling of smooth acceleration and power is hard to beat.

I drove a diesel for the 14 years preceding my purchase of a 5.7 last fall. I never depended on the color of a pump handle to pick my fuel. My guess is the OP won't from here on. Hope it works out for him without too much financial pain.

well, here’s the final conclusion…
I drove 40 miles pulling a 20,000 lb. fifth wheel on a mixture of 20% diesel, 80% gasoline. Ran smooth the first 30 miles, started to sputter the last 10. Ram dealership dropped and drained the tank, blew the lines, replaced the fuel filters. checked everything over, A-OK. Runs like a beast. And, I bet my Pistons are cleaner :)
Seriously though, luck was on my side, would never run this “experiment“ again...But a reassuring anecdotal experience (n of 1)

I’ll taste test every refill before I make that mistake again…

This was a common thing to do in the 40s or earlier when most cars ran on an equivalent of 60 octane fuel. Today you're just lowering the octane of your gas as diesel is an auto igniter and ignites at 75 to 100 degrees lower than gasoline.

Probably placebo effect. Same as me after i change oil i think the engine is quiter at idlel lol.,,

Could be though, but with all the emissions/computer controls of today I'd be careful what your putting in your fuel. There's a lot of expensive stuff that can get ruined. Not worth it imo.

The same thing happened to me and my truck. 1996 ext cab diesel. about 3/4 gas added maybe a little less gas...
Anyway, when I got a few miles down the Interstate, it sounded and started driving different.
I slowed down (as it wasn't doing anything scary) to 55mph, and just lightly used go pedal. Next exit with diesel was about 40 miles down the road, and I added 2 gallons diesel there. Another 40-50 miles and 2 more gallons added. Kept doing this until I got back home (approx 500 miles later). Drove it carefully from then on until tank at 1/4 full, filled it full w diesel, and forgot about it.
All good. That was in 2002, about 250,000 miles ago. 451,000+ on it now. Just rebuilt (with uprated mainshaft, bearing upgrades etc, and a 6 speed flywheel and clutch component kit (sachs), starter brush upgrade (Cummins non cut down brushes), new A/C cab to compressor, and KYB shocks. By the way, the best upgrade besides tst #3 plate and 270+ rwhp/840 rwtq were those shocke! I had already put Gabriel HD high performance shocks on it in 2001, at 230,000 miles, but WOW! The kybs changed the truck steering, ride, handling, EVERYTHING is so much better. They are expensive (for shocks) but best upgrade for $ I have done on the truck, and any vehicle, I owned.

Couple places around here have black handled same size nozzles for both gas and diesel... If I'm not use to the pump/station I end up doing a sniff test on the nozzle, and look for the dirtier nozzle of the two [emoji23]

I did the same thing to and 06 ford diesel. Took to the dealer they drained the tank and change the filters and everything was OK. I have Geico insurance and they covered the costs.

Exactly right. Diesel is oily and it doesn't dry, so it collects dirt. I have two 5-gal. fuel cans and I discern the diesel container by the dirt. The can with gasoline is clean.

Depends on the how the injectors make out. Could be a few hundred bucks, could be a 20k insurance claim. You may get lucky but I know that much gas can mess up the glow plugs, filters, injectors pretty bad.

As someone post above DEF is an instant replace complete fuel system and all components.

The 6.7L Cummins doesn't have glow plugs.

Really! What voodoo do they use to cold fire? I wasn’t aware of that there was another way. Pretty neat

Late model Cummins 6.7's use a heated grid on the intake that heats the incoming air and coupled with the high compression of the engine, ignites the diesel fuel.

Cummins has used a grid heaters on all of the engines(5.9 versions also) for the Dodge/Ram trucks.
