I still add a diode to any relay that's going to be turned on and off lots. I've been doing this since the late 80's,and have never had to replace a relay since then.

It is really interesting to see the "voltage spike" that happens when a relay opens. Some weird stuff, speaking of the 80's, some of that weird stuff was clocks changing time when the power seat was operated.

Way back in the 80's i knew an old electrical engineer,and he gave me the heads up on how to do this. At the time i was wiring quite a few slotcar tracks,and he told me to use a diode,to get more life out of the relays . Now with the amount of sensitive computors in the automotive world,it's an even better idea then it was back then,not only does it reduce the voltage spike,it also prolongs the life of the relay contacts.
