Who knows if this will ever actually be a thing, but it's a pretty cool concept. It's a small locomotive turned into a semi, basically. Supposedly regulations are blocking them from putting them on the road because Canada hasn't certified the diesel generator for on road use.

Power numbers look insane, though I'm sure they are quoting at the wheel touching the ground. At the motor, locomotives are making about 60k ft/lb so I doubt this truck is doing better than that even with three electric motors.

There's some speculation they could use non-taxed diesel since the generator never drives the tires, but I don't know enough about CA law to know if that's well founded.

The same generator is completely legal if it's sitting on the ground charging the truck but not if it's on wheels going down the road .. um .. because it causes more pollution? Even though it's not used to power the vehicle wheels directly.which should exempt it from road emissions just like those diesel powered Tesla Superchargers.

Now don't get me wrong here, I hate paying for higher road taxed fuel too, but without the diesel generator running the truck cannot move. So I don't see it being "legal" to run no tax dyed fuel without it being in violation. Plus the generator is incorporated with the truck, not a seperated entity.
That's just the way I'd expect the govt. to see it.

The truck can move without the generator running. It just won't have nearly the same range.

The argument is that it's not part of the drive train, like a ****** truck or an RV generator, it's in the vehicle but not driving the wheels.

I get what you're saying as well, and have no idea how it would shake out. I figure they'd just change the law if the "loophole" is legit.

Theres a few arguments. They tell us the tax goes towards road maintenance too. The truck regardless of how it's powered still has wear & tear on the roads, so theres that too.

So, this a locomotive on wheels... I'm 100% in..sign me up!

I'd want a Series 4000 MTU diesel engine spinning a 1MW to a 1.5MW alternator to some oversized locomotive grade electric motors!!!

C'mon zombie apocalypse!!!!!!!!

I love this concept, and that they are looking to do pickup conversions too. I have said for a long time having a purely ev powered vehicle that has its own generator, diesel being the most efficent way is by far the way we should be going. taking any small diesel generator (for a car or pickup) that has enough power in its sweet spot rpm running a generator sized to the batteries you get multiple pro's, never worry about range, heat for the cab and the battery's so they charge correctly, and you can run things like power steering or ac compressors, at least with assists for them All that being said more on the actual topic on hand I don't think dyed diesel will be allowed, that on road tax will get paid I think they will change the law to basically say if the engine runs while the vehicle is under power it is getting taxed.

Sure, that's why I figure they'll just close the loophole even if the argument wins. Kind of like EVs here end up with a road maintenance fee on their annual registration. Since they aren't paying gas tax, but still using the public roads, they just made them pay one lump sum to make up that difference when they renew.

Yup, same here with the EVs. They get you when you register.
