Got a livestock trailer yesterday & shouldn’t have. Old trailer + new truck, not enough clearance. Got home & tailgate is dented and the back corners on the top of my truck bed damaged. The trailer isn’t plated since it is for hauling cows.

Question: I’m not trying to defraud insurance, but I pay them a LOT every month to insure my $75k 2024 truck. Does anybody have any experience in such an insurance claim? I’m concerned they’ll deny me since the trailer isn’t insured/titled/etc.

Thx

Im guessing a lot of it depends on the actual insurance agency

Contrary to popular belief, they are in the business of making their shareholders money, NOT protecting thier policy holders

Having said that, i have farmers and they rock, i would have no qaulms filing a claim with them for this

HOwever this sounds like a 5-7k fix

seems to me it might be akin to you backing into your mailbox or accidentally opening your door into an object and causing damage. owner error. It would depend on what coverage you selected when getting the policy. I recently went thru this with my insurer after I put some DEF in my fuel tank because I had a brain fart. I had bare bones coverage or else the 1200$ it cost me to drain and flush fuel system would have been covered but subject to the deductible.

Depends upon company, policy written, coverages, exclusions listed, maybe a lil luck too...

My understanding is trailers don't liability have insurance since the only time they can cause damage is when they're being pulled by a truck. Basically, the truck's insurance covers them. Insurance against theft, storm damage, etc., yes but not liability.

I did something similar when I got a 5th wheel years ago and came up with a method of holding the bed slightly open when I was backing my trailer (the problem only came about when the hitch was slid in the rearward position. I got a couple small chains and hardware to hold the bed +/- 6" open.

Depends upon person 's insurance company. I personally, have an addendum on my policy covering my Trailer as a separate part of my truck policy with collision etc on the trailer.

Did you not see there was going to be a clearance issue? The damage was all caused by you. :waytogo:

Way more here than meets the eye. Going up or down a slope. When the truck levels out but the trailer is still on the grade, clearance changes and it can happen fast. The other issue is leveling the trailer while still trying to ensure you have bed/tailgate clearance. 20 inch wheels on the already tall Rams while having 16s on the trailer doesn't do much to help even wear on the tires on your trailer. Sucks.

It doesn’t matter Who caused the damage. The Owner is covered …by his own Comprehesive (if he has that)….subject to deductible.

It’ no different than if he ran into his own wife’s car in his own driveway. Both cars are still covered.
