It's not common. The same grid heater is used on school busses, garbage trucks, tractors etc. The same design has been in use for a long time.
I give mine a little pull every time I have the hood open to convince myself that it is ok in there. I wouldn't worry with more than that. The grid heater is a really good thing to have.
If it does go, yep, wrecked engine. Damn aggrevating to have happen due to a 10 cent nut.
