If you've got manual door locks and manual windows, you don't have a locking tailgate so far as I know.

And for what it's worth, when I close my tailgate with the truck running, get back in and put it in gear...it locks all doors and the tailgate. I don't have to fumble in my pocket to dig out a key to lock it. In other words...my life is a lot easier.

I get wishing things didn't change. I'd prefer to have a manual transmission in all my vehicles. But because of the push toward automated controls in everything, it's no longer an option and I don't really have a choice anymore. Complaining about it doesn't do anything.
Yes, I have a locking tailgate - electronic only, which I don't trust because I can't just push the fob tailgate button and walk away; it requires me to walk around behind the truck to double check if it's locked. But apparently, for whatever God-knows reason, they decided I'm not allowed to do it with the engine running and the door open. And all my vehicles have been manual, until this one. I could have bought another, but I just decided after 40 years of clutching I was tired of it.

There was a recall on the tailgates opening at will late last year or earlier this year.
You should be able to look up the recalls and if and/or when they were done with your VIN.
I have a new one for the newer CTD's for 2019 - 2022 RAMS For the DEF system.
There is a Malfunction Indicator Lamp or MIL, that may malfunction and show that it needs serviced. It takes about 1.5 hours, give or take.
I am making a list and will check it twice to include the rest of the recalls sent before the BFT is out of hibernation. Easier than getting them done one at a time like the other truck....

The saga continues.....

I went to a local shop because I don't have the time or the patience to get this done along with the tools or lifting capability to do so....

Went with the recommendation of the severe service pads and rotors. Fronts were an issue to get off with all the rust that came out. The pads were low and the rotors were heat checked.

New ones on, all is good.

The rears.....there was so much rust on the inside of the rotors the parking brakes prevented the rotors from sliding off....the linings of the parking brakes were corroded off when pulling the rotors. So now I need new backer plate/parking brake assemblies. I hate the fact that this happens to vehicles up this way.

It'll be until Tuesday before they can get the parking brake assemblies in and those are not cheap because the plates have the caliper mounts on them.

I hate the stupid drum style parking brakes on vehicles. I know the parking brakes on my Father's SAAB's that he used to drive, the parking brake was a cable to a lever on the rear calipers that would clamp the pads down on the rotors. And then there were large springs on the calipers/lever that would release the pads off the rotors when the parking brake was released.

And if you're wanting to double check to make sure it's actually locked before you walk away, you can't unless you leave the fob in the house or something? Who came up with that farked up idea.

I have electronic lock only on my tailgate. I have noticed that if my truck is running and the driver's door is open I cannot lock the tailgate. I haven't experimented with truck off/door closed/truck running/door closed, etc., but I shouldn't have to stop my truck and/or close the door to get the fob to do what I want it to do.
My tailgate was giving me Not Closed message intermittently. Now the message stopped appearing but the gate won’t open anyway. Possibly a bad fuse. And yesterday the camera stopped working. Now working again but tailgate out of service message briefly appears for a split second. I saw a YouTube where he said to check fuses which i will do when I return home. If this allows gate to open I’m guessing that I have to spray lube into the latches so that the switches sense the latches lock.
Three total… if not more.

I don't get any kind of message regarding my tailgate, open or closed. The only way I would know If I forgot to close it is if I put it in reverse and the camera shows me the ground under my hitch.
