Diy taillights look like you did it yourself. Buy nice ones or leave them as is

Tinted mine using VHT nightshade, going to cut and polish them so they will gloss up nice! Taped off the white lense area so I would still be able to use my reverse and cargo lights, but it looks great! Ill try to find a picture!

I recommend a tint film or buying lights. Did the paint option awhile back and don't like it. Got 3rd break light how I wanted it, looks great in the day but looks like **** when the light is on, you can see it was painted. Maybe the humidity was not right at the time, IDK....

Did 4 coats on the tails, only 3 were recommended, and they are not dark like I wanted them. But, they don't look like crap when lit up like the 3rd break light does. I didn't even bother to polish the tails. Going to buy some new lights or remove it all, re-polish and take it down to have film put on them.

I'm not going to claim I did it in the right conditions, but I have experience spraying paint, even from the crappy rattle cans and it is obvious to me with shading lights, this job may be extremely humidity and temperature sensitive to get it right or it just flat out doesn't look good when lit up. I'm not going to keep removing this stuff and re-spray to figure it out.

I tinted the brake lights headlights and third brake light. All you need to do is put a little black paint some clearcoat and spray away. You could make them as dark as you want.

Did you clear them or sand them to make them so nice I've hardly seen some that turned out any good other than professionally done

if you do them right, with the proper sanding and polishing, then they will look great, if you rush em, dont clear them or polish them then they will look dull and like crap, i had a DIY on here with step by step but photobucket and their new $400 fee killed that for us...

any DIY job can look as good if not better than the professional stuff, you just have to do research and know what you are doing, i rattle canned a fender on one of my trucks and it has smoother and richer looking paint than the oem finish thats on it

It all comes down to technique. This is using cheap rattle cans here...

Thats what i used, i did a bit of sanding to prep the lights, the sprayed wet coats of VHT and then wet coats of Clear, and after that was all 100% cured and dried i sanded the lights to remove orange peel and polished them and this is my result...

What grit sand paper are you using and are you wet or dry sanding? Also, what polish compound are you using to do this?

i use 600 grit sandpaper before any paint gets laid down, then after everything is all painted, cleared and cured, you can use 2000 to get it smooth (all sanding is wet sanding)

i now use professional grade polishes, but in those pictures i used meguiars ultimate compound

All I did was wipe the tail lights down with rubbing alcohol, wipe them off with a clean microfiber and then spray 3 or 4 wet coats of the VHT Nightshades and no sanding and no clear coat and mine came out perfect. It's been 5 or 6 months and no fading and no issues.

well then you are the only one i have seen that has not had an issue with not clearing the tails, if there is no protection on the lens they will fade, thats what the clear coat is for along with making it where you can sand them perfectly smooth with absolutely no orange peel of any kind and have a deep black finish to them, VHT alone will have orange peel and not be as glossy as a cleared set of lights, also using VHT alone, the VHT finish can be damaged with using a heavy detergent like a strong degreaser, when you use a good clear coat on them they are as strong as your paint on your truck.

you can see in your un-edited pix that yours arent as shiny as they could be with a good coat of clear on them
7763cbae91cdbb01ae4d9c8963f3bc54.jpg

also since the only prep you did was wiping them down i Strongly suggest you do not sand yours

Here you go, i fixed my How-To i made years ago so that the pictures show up again

http://www.ramforum.com/f76/how_tint_your_tails_using_rattle_cans-3232/
Those look better then any aftermarket smoked lenses IMO. I'm doing another pair of tails right now, just finished 5 coats of nightshades, now just gunna give em a few days before I clear em. "Fully cures in 24 hours," but I like to make 100% sure lol. This is with 800 grit wet sand the lenses, paint prep solution to clean degrease em and 5 coats. Keep in mind this is obviously with no clear yet or anything, just paint.b5b5d6dac7bae14db664471df271465a.jpgd41e85139cd9165ded1dbad997d9e263.jpg

looks good so far, i wouldnt wait 24 hours before clearing though, when it comes to VHT, i clear when the tails are still alittle bit tacky, what that does is it lets the VHT and clear bond together better
