HID in a high beam is pointless unless you spend allot of time with you high beams on.

HID take time to "warm up" in order to get to full output, they also don't like to be turned on and off quickly.

You want a brighter high beam look into LED or higher output halogen.

If you use Bi-Xenon Projector HID bulbs there is no warmup time switching to high beams - they are instantly on. This is because the light is already on low beam (cutoff shield/shade in place), switching to high beam merely removes the cutoff shield/shade.

We have done many comparison tests and have never found a LED bulb reach as far as an HID bulb. The LED may look brighter but has never shone as far as an HID. Also, haven't found an LED shine as wide as an HID.

Okay, thanks, and yes, actually I do spend more time in high beam than low in my area, the lonely dark roads are where the deer lurk... and elk, and moose... and bear.... etc! How many seconds does it take to "warm up" H.I.D. bulbs to brighter than stock? My low beams with fog lights actually light up pretty good already!

in my experience, an aftermarket HID takes about 15-20 seconds to really get to operating temperature.

My recommendation would be to skip the HID in a halogen setup and look into a good HID specific Projector set up or a Aux. LED offroad light bar. In the end if you are only looking for more light on dark backroads I would say an aux. LED bar would suit your needs.

I have a 30" black oak that I love, but... have already been stopped once for having it on, the officer was kind enough to just warn me... Even though the roads are not populated, they are the main ones .

Being a college kid who could not afford a proper, full-on projector setup, I did the 50W 6000K H11 kit from Jeremy at RetroShop for the low beams in my quad housings. The low beam has a small cover directly in front of it so there is minimal glare and I have yet to be flashed ONCE by oncoming traffic since I installed them almost a year ago. I highly recommend this affordable setup as it is a huge upgrade over stock (or any other halogen) bulbs while still being considerate of other folks on the road. 40c0f7e5a921ec349238c5acf89502ae.jpg

As far as i know when useing a led or hid in a reflector houseing it has then tendency to scatter the reflected light all over the palce on both low and high beam......No so in a projector type houseing....

try this......Take a flash light and point it at a mirror and see what happens on a wall ....Then same flash light with a toilet paper tube pointed at same wall...Not exact but a better idea..

I have reflectors in my 18 wheeler and the reflector for my high beam(has hid kit in it) is smaller than my low beam .....When hi beam is on,light goes everywhere like a flood light..

Look for cheap other mods to ease the mod rush you feel....There are lots to do...BUT if your gonna mod,do it right the 1st time and save more $ to do it......

I know the mod fever....Modded a bike,my 2nd ram and my 18 wheeler a lil bit on each..

I can tell u that I pass a this gen almost every morning with HID in regular housings and it is quite blinding. It's different than seeing a regular high beam as it gets worse the closer it gets.

Uh....there is allot of glare based on your pictures.

Just because you are not getting flashed does not mean you are not blinding the **** out of on coming traffic!

X2. I saw the low beam picture and thought to myself, that would bother me if I was driving towards it. But I didn’t want to make him feel bad.

Here in Oklahoma, people will flash their headlights if oncoming lights are too bright. I find it very odd that in over 10 months of driving not one single person has tried to warn me that my headlights are too bright or blinding them. If there was "allot of glare" you would think at least ONE person would just assume that I had my brights on and throw me a flash. I am fully aware that it is not the proper setup and have full intentions of upgrading to projectors after college but until I receive feedback from others on the road I guess I will just keep "blinding the **** out of on coming traffic."

But I didn’t want to make him feel bad.

Make me feel bad? Skin must be a little thinner in New York. I can handle a bit of criticism from two Yanks.

I lifted my truck 4” and still run the stock halogen candles. I get flashed all the time on low beams. How would he be able to go a year and never get flashed?

Thanks y'all for the advice! I'll definitely wait until I can do it right. I don't want to be "that guy" that blinds everyone! Looking for other cheap mods to satisfy my hunger for mods!

It is less about thick skin, but more about I just don't go out of my way to make someone feel bad about what they have invested in. By the way, I went to Baylor University, and grew up overseas (as an American expat), so not really a Yank, or a southerner.

This is a proper cutoff:

Notice how, there is no spilled light on the drivers seat on the car to the left or the back of the seat on the car straight ahead:
