So i was looking into buying train horns and i had a couple questions if anyone could give me some input.

i was going to get the 5 gallon tank, and was wondering if anyone had mounted one under the cab and where at. where did you mount the compressor at, is it able to be mounted under the truck as well?

pictures would be very helpful as well,

thanks!

I think there are a few on this forum that have a train horn. I think most are mounted under the bed opposite of the exhaust. There are some you tube videos of people mounting these or at least showing you where they were mounted. I dont know if you will have enough room to mount under the cab. Space is pretty limited up there.

Yeah I didn't phrase that's as well as I would've liked. Under the truck wherever, bed cab etc. I'm just wanting to avoid doing a tool box set up if possible

i have mine mounted behind my seat. compared to my exhaust, its not that loud. but you have a 4th gen. Ive seen a guy with the compressor mounted to the frame.
one thing i would make note of, when you go to mount the horns, see about mounting them so they are pointed down. i currently have them pointed to the left but plan on fabing up a bracket to hold them all and point them down.

I was planning on running the horns facing the rear of the vehicle on the underside as to not accumulate road gunk, I know a few people who've done that so that it's all hidden.

I would mount them down before I would pointing to the rear. It won't nearly be as loud towards the front if you do that, and that's where the target is going to be.

Not "train horns". Matter if fact the only place you can fit real train horns would probably be in place of the spare tire. Now if your talking about air horns, they come in different sizes/configurations. I would crawl around your truck and decide where/how you want to mount it and get something that will fit.

Yeah they might be just air horns, they're the shocker s4's but yeah, only reason I'm asking is cause I'm in Iowa for work and my trucks home in PA so can't crawl around just yet :p

I am wanting to do this same setup. I'm thinking of mounting the horns in the open space behind the bumper underneath the radiator. Compressor and tank in my under the Tonneau toolbox -

I had a train horn on my 2011. Just sold it yesterday so I took the horn system and a bunch of other stuff off for my new truck! The best place you can mount the horns is to the crash plate under the engine. I had a 3 horn system set up with one horn underneath 2 horns. They were big, longest was just over 20" with a 6" bell opening. If you live where they salt the roads...DO NOT mount the tank and compressor to the frame. If you ever go through any water then you're asking for something to eventually go wrong. Plus the salt on the roads just eats at the tank! I bought my kit off Amazon so when the compressor failed they sent me a new one with a new tank. I then mounted the new one in my tool box and it was the best thing I had ever done with it! Mine is a Wolo system, which I would not recommend. I've gone through 2 compressors in one year. And the first kit they sent me had a hole in the tank! The horns themselves are nice, VERY LOUD!! However at -22 to -25 degrees Celsius the solenoid valve won't open. I'll try and find some pics I had of my set up. It was perfect IMO and I wouldn't have it any other way! On my new truck I'm going to bolt the tank and compressor right to the inside of the box and buy a box cover!

It's nice. I don't use my bed frequently, so I can sacrifice the space. I like the fact that I can store tools, tow straps, medical gear, survival gear, jumper cables, etc. in a watertight lockbox out of sight.

The one other option I saw was mount the tank and compressor in the tool box, and mount the horns underneath the tool box. Anyone else ever see this? I feel like it would mess with the quality of the sound

Here's where the horns are mounted. This makes them easy to work on and easy access to the factory horn wires!

Okay. I think for the kit I got I'll have to mount each individual horn so I'm not positive that will work although I'm sure I could engineer some bracket to mount all as one?

Yeah I found it to work the best! I just got 2 long bolts and drilled through the crash plate (I think this what they're called lol) it held the horn perfectly for a year! Now they're sitting in the shop waiting for my new truck! uploadfromtaptalk1399601419860.jpg
Here's a pic of the tank and compressor mounted to plywood which I then mounted into the tool box. Worked awesome!

One last picture! Lol, here it is mounted in the tool box out of the weather! If you're looking to install the horn yourself and wire it to the factory horn switch let me know! I'll post the pics of how it was wired in. Basically you have to run both wires from one horn (I chose the right horn) to your train horn. You then need to find the ground for the left horn, cut both of its wires (positive and negative), and run a wire from the left ground to the ground wire from the right horn that's going to your train horn. It needs 2 grounds to work properly, at least on mine it did! Hope this helped lol

I was thinking of running a separate switch. Would I need a special switch? Or does a toggle switch work
