I recently replaced a module in the front passenger door of my 2012 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn because it was draining batteries. The drain is now gone, but the side mirror no longer has horizontal movement. The vendor tells me I need to get the module programmed at the dealer.

Hoping to do this myself, instead of going to the dealer, I bought an app called JScan. Unfortunately, its throwing errors when I try to use it and the company isn't telling me when the problem will be fixed.

Last night, I bought another app called AlfaOBD but I'm struggling to find a setting that does what I need it to do. Am I missing something in the program? Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Newell

Bump!

Any suggestions on how to use AlfaOBD to do this? Or a recommendation for another OBD programmer?

Just looked thru the programming for you truck and didn't see anything major to program. Just points to activate to test and a couple on /offs like the marker light

Do you think my new module is a dud?

I didn't mention it before, but the turn signal on the mirror has also stopped working.

If I put back the old module, the functionality (turn signal, remote control of horizontal adjustment) returns. In my mind, this points to a problem with the module

Sounds like you’ve pretty much narrowed it down to a bad module then

Update....

In AlfaOBD, I found something else to try. Here's what I did:
  1. 2nd dropdown="Body Computer"
  2. 3rd dropdown=Central Gateway Module “MY2006-12 Non-PowerNet”
  3. Push "Connect"
  4. Push "open hood" button
  5. Select "Car Configuration Change" (near bottom)
  6. Select "Cabin Network: DMFR Door Module Front Right"

I tried to "Set" "Cabin Network: DMFR Door Module Front Right". There was no feedback or errors. I turned off the ignition and waited for 30 seconds, turned it back on, but no change. I also checked the log BODY_CHRYSLER_Info.log but its empty.

Did I make the right choice in step 2? My truck is a 2012 Laramie Longhorn with HO Cummins.

Normally even if you select the incorrect bcm it will automatically correct itself. I wouldn’t worry about that part.

Poking around in unknown settings in Alfa is dangerous business, hopefully you made a backup of your bcm first. What obd2 dongle are you using?

If I were you I would argue with the “vendor” whoever that may be and try to get them to send a new module.

That's a good tip about making a backup. I'll do that going forward.

The program is new to me. All of the settings are unknown!

The adapter is a "Vgate vLinker MC+ Bluetooth OBD2". I feel like it's working ok. Its named in the AlfaOBD documentation and isn't issuing any errors. I updated it's firmware for good measure.

If all the functions work with the exception of the battery drain with the old module, and the only thing that changes is a different module, it sure sounds like a bad module.

Bringing closure to the thread...

I finally have a fully working passenger front door today. All of the problems I mentioned before are fixed, though I plan to keep my jumpstart battery with me for a while, to be sure.

It turns out, according to both the vendor (who is a certified Mopar Parts reseller), and the local Ram dealership, the replacement door module does need to be programmed. But, the module I ordered was also a dud! They warranted the part, but I had to pay for two hours of labor (the first was wasted, diagnosing the faulty new module).

In retrospect, as a shadetree mechanic, knowing that neither AlfaOBD nor JScan can program that module, I would have been better off to go to the dealer and let them do the whole project. Going forward, I'll make sure these modules are either "plug and play" or programmable by some other means before I purchase and install them on my own.

If the module was bad there is no way you could program it at all. So who is say you could not have programmed the module yourself? Not saying you could, but how do you know you could not? Alfa OBD has allowed me to enable a few things on my truck that the dealer said could not be enabled.

On the new faulty module, the dealership technician was able to program the mirror to work, but not the signal light. He thinks it had a bad internal connection.
