2500 v8 uses the 46re same as v8 1500. The diesel and v10 2500 use the 47re and is slightly stronger.
The 46 and 47 are almost identical as far as function and internal workings.
They only have problems if not properly maintained

Not much better than the half tons.

I've know folks that ate through 47's with a stock diesels merely making them haul occasionally. Even the 47's need a shift kit and cooler.

i have a 97 2500 with a 46re. i bought the truck with 140k (not has 144) trans shifted fine for the 1st month the OD stopped then took a little longer to shift into 3rd. Decided to buy a solenoid upgrade kit and fluids. Took it to a shop they dropped the pan called me with bad news. A band broke somewhere and metal parts all over the pan. I didnt believe him because it ran fine. put it back together with the new fluid (didnt change the solenoids) to took it for a 2nd opinion. Same thing, band broke. So i got it rebuilt with upgraded components for 2k now shifts like a beauty. These are know to have pressure sol/governor issues so it gears are dragging start with the solenoids
