Thirty minutes of time is cheap insurance against being stranded in a traffic jam or storm with an empty tank.
I guess it also depends on where you live. Around here a "traffic jam" might cost you 5 minutes. Maybe 10 minutes once or twice in my life? And in those cases, I shut the vehicle off, fuel status notwithstanding... In these parts if you have to wait 30 seconds to pull into traffic, or at an intersection (we don't have traffic lights in our town - there are 4 sets of traffic lights in about a 30 mile radius) you start seeing red.
And I do occasionally fill my tank when it's half or above, like if I'm going on a trip, or if I'm on a trip and see a sign that says "Next gas 400 miles".
