I want to beef up the rear suspension to tow a travel trailer (haven't bought yet). Coils in rear. I'm guessing my options are to change to beefy after market coils. They're touted to add 50% load capability. I'm also guessing I may be able to add inner coil air bags and possibly coil over shocks. So I'm wondering if any or all of this is true and if this is a good (but expensive) way to go? I tend to overkill when logical. I'd like to be able to tow up to 8000lbs total everything with maybe 400/500 (MAX) tongue weight. Although Ill likely get something closer to 6000 lbs total. I'll also likely install trailer stabiliers that will help tremendously. So, ANY opinions or expert advice is welcome. Thanks Popfish..

Your tongue weight will be over 500lbs for sure.

I had the red airlift bags inside my coils. Those paired with a good load Distribution hitch made 7500lbs easy.

In my opinion you don’t want to go over 8,000lb with a 1/2ton Ram. My trailer was 7500 and I could tell I was pushing the trucks comfort zone.

the inside coil bags worked fine. I did do a Y and placed the Schrader pointing down bottom of bumper. Can’t remember how many PSI I ran. Maybe 40psi? And I used a Husky Centerline hitch.

Thank you. I am using the husky round bar weight distribution hitch. My trailer Maxes out at 5800lbs. I have the hemi but the rear end is only 3:21. You can see the little sag in this pic or it is the parking lot I am not sure. We have towed this trailer about 8000 km last year and if my wife has her way more this year

I was in that same situation. 2012 1500 5.7, air lift 5000 air bags and a WD hitch, my TT is 33ft and weighs 7500 empty and we were careful to not load the trailer with a lot of weight. Let’s just say that it was not pleasant at all to tow. It really felt like the cart was pushing the horse around.
Traded to a 2500 this past fall. I haven’t towed with it yet but I am looking forward to it now.

If you want to try the air lift airbags I have my used set on sale on eBay. They are less than two years old

Take a look at AirLift 1000HD air bags. These with a WD hitch set up would be a good fit and not affect your ride.
