I don’t know the correlation between these two, and I have quite a bit of experience working on cars and trucks, but this is my first diesel and I know they are more complicated and temperamental than gassers. So I’m throwing this post out there hoping someone with more experience can help me out.
Prior to installing the new steering box, my truck would have a small amount of haze coming from the crank breather under the truck and none coming from the oil fill cap. Right after installing the new box I went for a test drive and noticed a small amount of haze coming from the engine bay while idling at a stop light and assumed that it was steering fluid burning off from what I spilled when topping it off. When I got back I inspected it and noticed quite a bit more haze from the breather tube and now also from my oil fill cap. Additionally my rear main started leaking which I changed about 6 months ago when I took the trans off to rebuild.
The engine runs strong, starts instantly, doesn’t blow any smoke other than a little black pre-boost, and I have experienced no loss of power.
Hoping somebody can give me some advice. Thanks.
Update: it’s a vacuum leak. Covering the port on the vacuum pump substantially reduces the amount of haze. Now I’m just wondering why changing the steering box had such an effect on it.
