Today we scrubbed momma's GDI Turbo Engine guts with CRC Intake Valve and Cleaner @ 32,250 miles. Mazda is one of few turbo GDI engines that built in some kind of coalescing breather into the PCV routing. It's just a baffle box, but better than nothing at all like many builders do. This info from reading up on their engines.

However, it sure doesn't seem like they have a default limp mode! The cleaner spray is highly concentrated PEA and is not to be sprayed onto the MAP / MAF sensor, so it has to spray downstream by disconnecting the air intake tube. Man, that engine bucked, sputtered, and backfired like crazy, but we got through the ordeal. Seems to run fine after re-hooking the air intake up. Then we changed engine oil.

I don't have a borescope, so WTF knows how much good it did? A couple hours and a $25 can for home-made "Induction Service", done per Hoyle.

You can pick up a pretty cheap boroscope camera that'll plug into a phone Brian.Quite a few are under 20 bucks.

Hell I haven't even gotten to breather filters yet, so much stuff broke this summer.

I know I did some good today. Just don't know how much.
Onward to firewood splitting and deer hunting.

Well I'll be damned - Bezos World has all sorts of boroscopes. These were an exotic, expensive thing when I was a car pup. Just bought one for use with smart phone.

Getting at Mazda turbo intake manifold is a pain - the intercooler outlet tube comes up to the manifold from the bottom! Have to crawl under the car to disconnect then snake the scope tube from the bottom.

I'm more interested in inspecting Harley compensator ramp surface over the winter without have to take off the chain case (which I did to upgrade the ramp) with a bunch of different length capscrews - and draining the fresh oil.

Thanks @Wild one

Between no port injection, EGR and crankcase ventilation, the intake valves really coke up on GDI engines. The quite high compression and low tension rings make things even worse.

You can really see the difference on the "I Do Cars" channel when he pulls the intakes off of GDI engines compared to port injection. The dual injection engines are marginally cleaner than GDI, but not near as clean as straight port injection.

Got to make things better for us you know. Sure...

Yes, the power is there with GDI and turbos, but longevity is out the door.

This was all done for EPA CAFE mileage regulations. Mitsubishi was 1st out of the chute in the 90s. They advertised +20% mileage increase. The reality was only +5%, because they only showed lean burn mode mileage increase. i.e. - they mislead the industry.
But only +5% was enough for everyone to copy single injector GDI.

I give credit to Mazda for designing in a PCV breather coalescer to slow the oil buildup on the turbo compressor vanes and intake valve stems. I don't think other brands add it. That's why adding another catch can hasn't been urgent, I just blasted the intake with CRC PEA to clean it.

I looked at Mazda's coalescer online from a schematic. It's a halfway descent baffle.

I've got a cheaper one that has it's own camera, but i've wondered if the ones that plug into a phone might have a better pic.Which one did you buy Brian, and make sure you update us on how it works. You want one with a small enough end to fit into a spark plug hole,i think mine has about a 5.5 mm end.

Yeah, I didn't need a dedicated camera in this day and age. I didn't check the end diameter cause my main purpose is Harley inspection through the huge derby cover hole and engine intake valve stems through intake manifolds.

Per usual, Amazon search functions still return thousands of products. I sorted via most popular and 4+ star ratings.

Hopefully it fits in a spark plug hole as it looks like it has a 7.9mm head.Let us know how it works,as i've wondered if they might have better resolution then the self contained units have.

obviously this is just some wishful thinking here, but those GDI engines without an egr without the pcv system, and with some kind of oil catch can would be really good.

I don't think an animal like this could exist anymore in North America or Europe. All this junk they hang on to the engines is required to meet a federal government regulation: EPA or EURO for CAFE fuel economy and pollution - pollution including from engine exhaust and no other emissions such as open PCV vent tubes.

What is needed is the closed PCV circuit WITH an effective breather coalescer STANDARD. Nobody should have to install aftermarket "catch cans" to make the engine last for continent-wide sales. These were originally for regional emissions standards.

Same thing with GDI - a single GDI is NOT a complete combustion solution.

IDK, it's cheap enough I would always search for another one with smaller head if I need it. It is really nice to have to inspect intake valve stems these days. But 1st jobs 1st - gotta see if I need to replace the HD damper ramp again.
