This is response to post made by gmac7 on Aug 29, 2017, I realize this is a little late however I have a 2003 4.7 that was doing the exact same thing and drove me crazy. I couldn't find the issue the ASD relay getting hot and kicking off tried everything imaginable. Then while stating beside the truck trying to figure it out, I found one of the coils were shorting out I could hear it arc then within seconds the truck would start idling rough then die all of the issues described in the original post were there. I replaced all the coils, and the issues have gone away to my amazement. The real puzzling part it never once threw a code. I really hope this saves someone else hair.
