Vehicle: 06 Dodge ram 1500 hemi 5.7 2WD

Symptoms:

  • turns over but starter seems week.
  • Past few months, intermittent stalling issues at idle but usually only happens once per drive.
  • Past 2 weeks, hard start, have to pump to get it to start.
  • Now weak crank no start.
  • NO DTCs
  • Live data TPS voltage does not change which pedal is pressed however, APP voltage does change.
Parts replaced

  • battery (tested bad) new one test good
  • Throttle body (tps signal not responding)
  • Starter (old one was rapid clicking not turning over, tested bad)
  • Crankshaft position sensor
  • Camshaft position sensor
  • Egr valve (replaced a while back with an Amazon one I don’t trust)

Inspect all battery, starter, and alternator wire connections for oxidation and crud.
The large wire connection lugs will have to be disconnected to inspect.
Just remove the negative battery terminal before starting.

Search YouTube for testing voltage drops on starters or alternators.

Do you own or have access to a digital multimeter and have any experience using them?
If not, they're very inexpensive to buy at Harbour Freight or Walmart and easy to learn.

If you don't discover a voltage drop in any of these locations, perform a battery load test using a toaster-style load tester like this $18 device from Harbour Freight.

A new battery that tests OK with a digital load tester is no guarantee of having a functional battery.

These tests are a great starting point, before spending $ or more time with other tests.

And, welcome to Ram Forum.

Ok, I’m cleaning up all grounds now and terminals. I forgot to mention I have 60 psi at the fuel rail which is why I’m leaning towards wiring. I barely get half a crank when trying to start. I have a multi meter and plan on testing voltage at the starter tomorrow. Multi meter is at work. Bummer the parts grenade failed to hit anything…

Be sure to learn how to test for voltage drops; this is a bit different from simply measuring the B+ voltage levels here and there.

Voltage drop testing verifies connections and wiring by measuring for conditions that could create an unexpected current draw in the wiring.

It will easily identify impaired crimp lugs or damaged wiring that may have no apparent visual deficiencies. Any faults in the starter wiring will reduce the available voltage at the starter, but this can only be measured while under load. Other than voltage drop testing.

A simple voltage check using a ground reference will not identify this type of fault.
