2 weeks ago a had crank and stall issues. I replaced the fuel pump and now it is.weird. the first start of the day is crank stall crank stall crank and stays running. I pulled spark plugs and didn't see and gas or smell any gas. The fuel pump is new.
After the first hard start the truck starts and runs fine all day. It literally is only the first start of the day.
Now my fuel pump stays running when the truck is off, so I need to do the TIPM.
But why am I having the starting issue on a true cold start. Could the pump be bad even though it's new?
I know your going to say check pressure but I really don't want to spend $100 on a tester. I would rather out that $100 towards parts.

Can evap cuz loss of pressure over night? Can tipm cause loss of pressure over night? Also there are no codes even with it stalling. Oil doesn't smell like gas. Plugs look good...

I'm stumped. Has anyone seen an issue like this before?

I had this issue on my 2012 a few years back and I replaced the fuel pump. Same symptoms nothing changed so I gave it to my buddy, who is a master tech at chrysler and he said the coolant temp sensor was leaking internally so it was reading the wrong temp at cold start and not giving it enough fuel. $40 bucks later and it was running the new. Knwoing what I know now, I always would check pressure before doing anything for the exact situation I just explained. I spent $300 on an OEM pump my cost, and I couldnt thrown a $40 sensor in it if I had checked pressure to begin with. Theres just too much going on with this new crap to diagnose things simply anymore. This sensor tells that sensor to do this and that. It's complex compared to the old carter on the side of a big block that you could swap for $40 bucks and be heading down the road again.

have you run and codes?

look up jumping power to the fuel pump from an alternative relay such as cig lighter that only comes on with ignition power. no reason to open that can of worms = new TIPM.

this is a known issue for sure and easy fix.. just the staying on part. you need to check the fuel pressures as well, fix TIPM and then run pressures fuel PSI.

To do a fuel pressure test on a late model Ram,you'll need a fuel pressure tester kit that has the adapters to let you unplug the fuel line from the fuel rail, and connect an adapter inline, that'll allow you to hook up a fuel pressure gauge,as they don't have a schrader valve to tie a fuel pressure tester into.

I got one of these kits.

not sure how it's going to hold up long term, since i've only used it once in the last year.

At this rate, i'll die of old age having used it about, twice.

though, if someone wanted to go as cheap as possible, this version would probly work too

Relay might be bad. Keeping pump on. Temp sens for ecm. Could cause hard start as well. Not sure if they use 1 temp sens or 2. On that year. Some vehicles have 1 for gauge & 1 for ecm. Bad pressure regulator would let pressure bleed off.

I have rented a tool from autozone and guessing O'reilly's does too, you get your money back when you return the tool

I've had the vertical visions .com mod for 4 years with no issues on my Grand caravan tipm, just plug n play over the proper fuses, looks like they make one for the 2012 Ram as well, has a 4 position switch to (1) turn on pump, (2) use orig relay, (3) use solid state relay, or (4) lockout pump so it won't turn on (anti-theft mode) Get the $99 dollar one, not just the jumper wires they offer. I was getting intermittent crank no start so went ahead and installed one as pre-emptive maintenance before the internal relay failed.

This is how the parts cannon gets loaded. You could have a reputable technician troubleshoot this, but it likely will cost more than a $100 tester that may never be used again.
