hey everyone, just wanted to introduce myself and this new 2017 Ram 1500 3.6l crew cab I bought for new daily and for work. I'm a GM for my brother in laws new HVAC company and we are just getting started and needed a pick up that we will wrap eventually... but I made this recommendation for this truck because the previous HVAC company I worked for had one, I drove it for awhile and before I got there they never took care of ****, and their 2016 1500 3.6 quad cab had 298,000 still running... so, I bought a 2017 1500, 3.6L crew cab, that looked pristine, I mean the carpets were immaculate front and back, looks like brand new tires on it, has 110,000 miles and I paid $15000 for it and the dealership was offering a 2 year, unlimited miles warranty for $3000 that I got them to agree to 4 years, unlimited miles, and it covers almost everything...When I looked at the service records, at 80,000 miles or so, the head gaskets were replaced and the timing chain... seems like serious work for somewhat young of a truck? Any thoughts?

And then what do recommend for service to be done now and things to look out for?

Thanks.! Looking forward to keeping this truck running amazing!

Welcome! Those fixes could have come been from extended overheating or lack of engine oil maintenance maybe. Not sure what else. You are in AZ, so if the history on the truck is from AZ, a potential likely culprit of what happened. Looks and sounds like they took care of it aesthetically, maybe a maintenance mishap, so that's promising. For peace of mind, the warranty was probably a good call and nice job on negotiating that. I say drive the $hit out of it for awhile to see if something breaks and can be fixed with the money you put in the warranty. It's a work truck, so maybe you will do so. If you want to learn to take care of it, you came to the right place. Just have to navigate some BS here and there as you would have to do anywhere else. But it's very minimal, a lot of good and very knowledgeable people here that have helped me learn to care for my trucks over the last decade and it has paid off.

I can tell you that I have the exact same year and configuration RAM. Trim might be different ( I have the Laramie ) but essentially they are the same. 98, 000 flawless miles. No issues. Jut routine maintenance. Transmission service around 48,000 miles. Rear differential flush and change at time of Trans service. ( rear wheel drive ) Tires at 58,000 miles ( originals are nothing to write home about ), Brakes at 96,000 miles. If you have no record of the Transmission service I suggest that to be one of your first projects. Much Info on it in this forum.
Welcome aboard.

Sounds like the upper end was rebuilt, there are a total of 4 cams on that engine, intake and exhaust cams and phasers each cylinder bank, sounds like it's all been replaced, they're rocker arms and tappets (that are the lifters) plus you have an extended warrantee, sounds like you got a good deal!!

I ran one of those engines in a different model for 200K miles with absolutely ZERO trouble using ordinary Walmart Supertech oil and filters.
I can’t say what caused such an early failure with your engine…but it’s not common and at least whatever it was…. it’s fixed!

Enjoy a great little truck!
