Just finished replacing timing components in my 02 JTEC 4.7... Anyone got questions?

So, a few months back, my truck developed this very faint metallic clicking sound. It slowly evolved to a more prominent clattering. A couple of weeks ago, it had gotten to the point that I was too embarrassed to let my truck idle, and I was very concerned something was going to come apart somewhere.

I used a stethoscope to narrow the noise down to the front cover (I suspected the chain to begin with, it was a very heavy consistent clatter).

Ordered everything, tore it all down last weekend, put it all back together this weekend.

I planned on doing a write up on it, but I got focused and didn’t take half the pictures I wanted to. I do have a few though, I’ll post here in a minute.

So, being as it’s super fresh on my mind, anyone have questions about the timing parts, or pretty much anything on the front of the engine?

Actually the chain showed no signs of wear at all, I just replaced it while I was in there. The noise itself was from the slack side chain guide on the drivers side broke, as well as the tension side guide on the primary chain. Thanks for the pics; I've been dreading the day I'll have to do this. How long total did it take you?

Its hard to say, honestly. I had a bunch of stuff that needed attention on top of all the timing junk, so I couldn’t give you a for sure time on how long it took me to do that.

I did a lot of electrical work like a few bad spots in some wires I had to fix, I completely redid all my wiring for the aftermarket lights, replaced a few broken connectors, Yadda yadda, and a hell of a lot of cleaning.

if I had to guess, I’d say the actual timing job from start to finish could have been done in one day easily, I was fighting weather and lack of sunlight a lot, but I think on a nice day, I could have started at 8am and had the hood closed before dark.

Also, it’s completely done now. It runs amazingly, and it’s never been this smooth and quiet since I’ve owned it.

big believer in the importance of precision required for these engines now. Night and day difference in idle quality, fuel mileage, and throttle response.
