Hey guys,

Im new an just thought if say hi. I have a rock crawler that I tow do I need a truck. I just got a new job with a company car so I figured why keep making a payment on my '11 tundra. Especially with some medical bills that are coming in from some stuff going on with my daughter.

Anyway, here's the new ram!

It's an 03 hemi with 84k on it. The tail lights and door trim will be coming off ASAP. But so far it's a really nice truck

It already has an exhaust but I was looking at a few tuners to help while towing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's the tundra I traded in.

Welcome. Good call on getting rid of the door trim. How long did you own the tundra? I'm curious on thoughts on the ram as a comparison. Granted the tundra was 8 years newer.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I'm posting from my cell so please excuse the grammatical errors. I traded the tundra in because I got a company car to dd. it didn't make sense to keep making a payment on a new truck that rarely gets driven. I have the ram and my jeep/trailer parked at my inlaws so the ram will get driven by my father in law a few times a week. That way it's not just sitting.

As far as tundra vs ram... It's not really a fair comparison with the tundra having the modern 6 speed. But I will say that side by side the tundra is a much stronger puller than the hemi. I suspect much of that is due to the 4.20 gearing and fantastic 6 speed. I pulled almost 9k lbs behind that tundra and had no issues other than getting 8.7 mpg lol.

My jeep and trailer weigh in around 6400 lbs so the hemi should do fine. I had an 06 hemi grand Cherokee that pulled my setup just fine. I figure this will do better than that since it has a frame.

I do really like the ram. It feels more "truck" like inside with the bench seat.

Anyone want to trade for stock tails? Lol.

Here's the real reason for getting rid of the payment

fae6064b.jpg

That's my daughter Amelia. She has cystic fibrosis. I
Completely changed what I was doing when we found out. Left my cushy but not great paying public sector job for a job with a private company. Working twice the hours now but hopefully will make more $. My wife is prolly getting laid off next year (she teaches in inner city schools in Pittsburgh) so I had to cut the bills down and figure out how to pay the med bills.

That being said, this ram is far from a beater. I lucked out finding such a nice tow rig. I really like the truck.

I had a tundra for a work truck and I hated that damn thing lol. An you definitely aren't exaggerating about the mpg when towing. It did pretty well without a trailer (17-19) but hook something up and good luck going from one side of the city to the other without a fill up in between lol.

Welcome! Nice truck. The Tundras are nice and can tow a LOT. Only thing I don't like about them is the ride is terrible. I drove my bosses Tundra everyday for 2 years and it was so nice to get in my Ram at the end of the day lol.

Beautiful daughter bro...best of luck to you and your family man...

You can pick that Hemi up a bit with some 4.56s and a tuner...i know you're tight on money but those mods will get you the most bang for your money I believe.

With the 5.7? The older style (pre-09) kinda brought the suck. But the new ones like mine were monsters. But ya I averaged 13 unloaded lol.

Im excited. I liked the matched grill and bumpers. What interal do you guys do the trans at? Should I look at doing anything to the trans for towing?

Any suggestion on a tuner? I ran the superchips on my Jk and liked it.

I can do gears so that cuts down the cost quite a bit. Its just a matter of finding the time. Do you guys get away with stock sized tires and 4.56s?

The trans should have had a service before you purchased it, but they may or may not have done it. It wouldn't really matter, mine was never changed till 105k miles.

All you should do is drop the tranny pan, drain what fluid you can, replace the filters, and refill with fluid. Its an easy job and the site has a couple guides on it.

Do you know if it has synthetic oil running it it now?

Yeah it was a 2007. Don't get me wrong, that thing was pretty damn fast for a truck, but I pretty much hated everything about the damn thing.

I very much doubt it has synth in it. The dealer changed it before I bought it.

With the trans, do guys do valve bodies or anything on these trucks? I figure if I'm gonna pull the pan anyway ya know.

Not sure about your year, but all I ever have to do is change the filters and fluids. There are two filters a spinon and a flat filter that just kinda fits in there.

Filters are like $30 from autozone and there are two versions of filters make sure you get the correct one. A 4x4 Tranny filter will have a longer tube coming off the filter.

My truck is completely stock because I have the V6 in it so I have no personal opinions on gears or tuners. But, there are a few guys on here with 4.56s, maybe they could chime in soon. Also I've heard the Superchips 3815 is good as well as the 3865 which comes with a tranny tune I believe. Hopefully someone can correct me if i'm wrong. The Diablo Sport Predator is another one I've heard about.
