K&N drop in filter

His claim is, he over did the oil step years ago and put the filter back in too soon. Oil fouled his air intake sensor and took his tech an hour to figure out what set the code. He realizes that the filter is probably less effective but,,,he cleans them regularly.

Well the instructions on the recharge kit do CLEARLY say not to over-oil.

Cleaning the filter regularly isn't going to make it catch any additional fine particulates, which is what the oil is all about.

Not really if you think about it....... I mean the kit is $15-$20 but it gets used 3-4 times before you have to buy another cleaning kit.

I've never kept a vehicle long enough to have to clean and oil the filter more than twice. I always end up buying a new kit because in the years that have passed since my last filter cleaning I've lost the old one. LOL

I can see that. I was curious what others thought about using the filter, but not the oil step. I know the filter is a high quality filter. Probably filters the air intake better than the paper throw away filters, even when used dry. He got me thinking about doing that.

I'm gonna go with "no" on that. The material K&N uses is more porous than paper filters, which is why the oil is needed, to attract small particles which would otherwise pass through. The folks at K&N put a lot of time and money into developing their product, I'd be wary of using it in a way other than how it was designed to be used.

Do you know more than ten engineers with doctorates? No offense, but I doubt it.

Fair point. Did not know that the medium was more porous (hence flows air better) designed to work as a system.

Every vehicle I have owned over the past 20 years has run the drop in K&N. I trust it. Some vehicles you could feel the power increase, some not. My ZJ’s w/the 4-Point-Slow I-6 especially.
But the evil Vararam thought keeps creeping into my brain.

I second the AFE. From everything I have read, the effiecency of the K&N isn’t great. Not worth the trade off in my opinion.

I saw those. Didn’t see a whole lot of people’s feedback regarding them. Do you guys use them? Back when I had my f150 everyone used s&b or afe so I know they have good products

I’ve also considered Green performance filters as they are also oiled like the k&n and are the filters recommended/used by Vararam.

I am using a Green panel filter and it works well. Seems to be around the same kind of filter quality as the K&N.

I put the K&N in my 17 Ram Hemi, cant tell the difference in sound or performance.

That's why I use nice thick paper filters and replace them every 10K miles(overkill,maybe but I'm OCD about maint.). People talk about saving money with a K&N or whatever but damn even as often as I replace them I'll spend a whopping $70-$75 over the next 5 years which is basically the cost of one fill up so I would say money isn't that big of a deal. Any gains that you might feel from a K&N aren't really worth the lack of filtration to me. Get a set of longtubes and a Hemifever or a Greene tune if you want to see some real noticeable performance gains.

If your vehicle has a MAF sensor, be aware the oil from the filter can cause issues. I had to go back to a dry type filter on my Jeep due to this.

hi i took a hols saw and cut holes in the bottom of my stock air box it workes great an 1 1/2 or 2 inch space them out and it looks good sounds very nice looks stock working on a new type filter on top so it has that old two 4 look

I was quite surprised by the lack of filtration. I have never noticed any abnormal contamination in my used oil analysis. I was thinking of trying the Napa gold and doing a few comparisons. Mine don’t get very dirty so I clean them once a year anyways.

You’re over oiling yours. If you hold your filter into the sun you should see a light pink film. I’ve wiped my intake with a cloth and checked the IAT and clean.
