Is there any kind of pre-filter available without going to an aftermarket air box or cone filter? I live in the rural desert, the area is LOADED with fine dust, and I'm tearing through air filters pretty quick as a result. Even at Rockauto prices, it's getting expensive.

I'm was half tempted to put a snorkel on the truck with the pre-filter, even though I don't ever do deep water crossings with this truck, until I saw the prices of those things now...

I don't want to go to a K&N style filter if I can avoid it either. Edit for the pedantic crowd

Just an fyi: K&N allows for greater airflow and is less effective at filtering fine dust.

That's a good call on avoiding oiled filters like k&n. I remember after Mt. St. Helens blew people here would wrap their air filters with several layers of toilet paper to help with the fine ash. I have no idea how effective that was but the local stores had a run on toilet paper for a couple of weeks. I wasn't one of those people. I was 17 years old at the time and was more worried about picking up girls than protecting the engine in my 14 year old car lol.

It probably worked...though I'm just imagining one changing out a *** of toilet tickets every few days on the truck at random parking lots..."it's my secret stash for the 2 minute warnings after eating at the Chinese buffet!" :anitoof:

I'm not seeing any evidence of the regular paper filters letting the dust through, so functionally it's fine, just getting expensive...though I might be a bit concerned about TP falling apart and eventually causing a clog rather than preventing one especially if the stories of turbos sucking air so violently that it's causing cheap paper filters to collapse are true.

I run the old school oil filled canister filter on my '59 International medium duty, and it works excellent, but I'd get a bit concerned about sending oil down a modern sensor filled intake tract these days, even if K&N style stuff didn't have the other issues.

Fine...edited...it's not like maybe I already was aware of the K&N issues, and maybe that's why I already knew I didn't want one, but then went and made the absolutely horrific error of also using a figure of speech...
I merely posted a simple statement about k&n filters... Sorry it bent you outta shape. Have a good day bud.

What do you mean you're "tearing through filters"? How do you know? Do they just look dirty or are they clogged up to the point you're getting a code?
I also live in a desert rural area and still go with the 15k mile recommendation. I could open the air box right now and it would be full of bugs and dust but it keeps working just fine.
I just use plain old WIX air filters from Rockauto as well.

My only thought: It is very dusty here but not like desert. As u know U do not run an oiled filter.

I run an AEM type of non-oiled filter that you can wash with a cleaner u can get from like Autozone. U spray down, clean by rinsing out with water, let air dry and re-install.

Maybe that be a possible answer to your quandary.

A couple of ideas:
1. Get a air compressor - you can blow out the dust from the filter to make them last a little longer.

2. My air box takes the air off the fender. Check the connection from the air box to the fender and the connection around the wheel well. Make them all tight.

Stay with good filters - FRAM and Wix.

So you would have to go with an AFE intake system but AFE does offer pre filters for their intakes. I have ran them in the past and they do a very good job

message me if you would like a quote
