knocking,smoke when started,other questions

i have a 1997 ram 1500 4*4 with a stage 3 chip and built transmission with a shift kit,when i first start it i hear a knock then it stops almost instantly sounds like a spun bearing? alsso when i floor it smoke comes out the exhaust and sounds like the valves are tingin

As for the smoke and pinging, it sounds like your intake plenum gasket has failed. As for the knock, not so sure.

Sounds like just a tired engine with a lot of miles on it.

The knock on start up probably is a worn bearing that now has a lot of "Clearance" now, and knocks until oil pressure rises high enough to "fill the gaps" so to speak.

The smoking is just oil blowing past the rings. Again, tired motor. Do a compression check and look at all the plugs. It may be one cylinder in particular, but I bet you have a bunch of miles and all eight of them are currently out of spec or close to it.

As far as the ping goes, that is probably the advanced timing curve with your Stage Three chip. Try running a higher octane and see if that helps quiet it down.

Either way, it sounds like it is time for a rebuild.
