How much labor is involved in swapping out the factory LSD for a TruTrac? In other words, how much time would it take a good mechanic to do the swap for me? Because I'm starting to get tempted.

In my JK I put in F&R TrueTracs. No electrical wires, solenoids, air lines etc. The only thing with the Eatons is that it is recommended for the gear oil NOT to have friction additive in it because it can affect the bias abit. The reason the TTs are called LSD because they will spin a tire that is fully slipping. BUT the trick is to give a lil brake and the spinning wheel will engage again. In the Jeep when I went playing and get a tire in the air, I would add a click or 2 of the parking brake to get the tires going again.

I was thrilled as hell to find that my 2018 2500 has the TORqueSENsing diff instead of a clutch LSD. Someday I will get a TT in the front.

Here is a great example of putting a lil break on.

I find it a little interesting that more than 20 years ago Mitsubishi was putting a hybrid LSD in some of their vehicles (1997-2004 Montero Sport, I think also 2002-2003 Montero) - which consisted of a geared Torsen-style LSD with an integrated viscous coupler that would supply resistance in proportion to speed so the geared diff would still behave just like an open diff when going around corners but load up if you got a wheel spinning because it was off the ground or on ice.

Nobody else appears to have done that - maybe a patent thing, but it seems like a good enough idea that it would have been worth developing something that skirts the patent with the same end result. Nobody other than Jeep appears to have made use of Varilok diffs either - another good idea that disappeared as quickly as it appeared.

@WY-Dave this is true of any torsen differential. AAM just doesn't spell it out as clearly. Friction Modifier additive interferes with the lock / unlock of the torsen gears - they slip during engage and disengage, and the additive shears and contaminates.

I had a big go-round on this with Banks pushing Amsoil exclusively with their cool cover. Amsoil told me they spike all their gear oils with LS FM additives. They wouldn't listen to me, so screw 'em. Red Line offers a couple of gear oils without additive for this reason. Also Mobil Delvac 1 has no additive cause big rig diffs don't have anti-spin either. Then there's the goofy, overpriced Mopar 75W-85, also without. FYI
