I’ve got a 96 1500 4x4 5.9 that I’ve run into quite a few odd part issues with. I believe the truck is some sort of “heavy half” as the tires required are d load range and tire pressures are 50 front and rear on the door sticker. First issue I had was purchasing drums and shoes for the rear. 96 parts didn’t fit. 2000 1500 laramie was an exact match and have worked fine. The rear end is original but I don’t understand why it’s different??? Would anyone happen to know what’s up with my truck? Is it some sort of camper special or something? Thanks!

Probably had the rear replaced from a 2000 pickup. I would think that would be fairly common given the crappy track record for the corporate 9.25 diff in these trucks.

I haven't had any issues with my 9.25. Then again so far I haven't had issues with any of the drive train stuff dodge people typically complain about.

You could locate the casting number on the center section (not the tag ID under one of the cover bolts) and have a Dodge dealership tell you what you have. I am assuming its a 5 lug wheel still?
