I tow a 35 foot 5th wheel with my 2017 2500 with 6.4 engine. Leaving on a 2 week trip to colorado, a little more than 1000 miles. Get around 9 MPG pulling. 1st stop is rapid city. Good amount of gas stations in between. After that, gets a bit more scarce on gas stations. Looking at gas can options. Either 3 five gallon or 1 bigger 15 gallon with its own pump. Anyone use this bigger one?

If I was going to be taking along extra fuel, it would be in 5 gallon containers just for the ease of lifting and storage. Also would find a quality military style "Jerry" can. If you planning on storing the 15 gallon right in the bed, and can fill it in place, that probably wouldn't be too bad. Just my opinion, and I'm sure many will tell you the hazards of carrying that much extra fuel in your vehicle, but it sounds like you have already made that decision. Good luck with your decision, and enjoy the trip, Rapid City is a beautiful area.

I use the steel NATO spec cans, the ones from Europe, not China. For transfer I have one of those siphons with a ball check you can prime by just shaking it. I also inserted an inline see through plastic fuel filter in the siphon because I’ve seen so much junk in the bottom of fuel cans over the years.

No decision made yet but leaning toward 3 five gallon cans. Putting my faith to one can that if something bad happens, am screwed vs 3 separate cans. What happen to the days you could get a truck with dual fuel tanks? Would be sweet to have dual 20 gallon tanks.

If you are going to carry gas in cans, I highly recommend investing in a metal type 2 safety can. The venting is controlled and they are a bit more secure than plastic.

Why not buy a new 2500 with 8' bed and get the 50 gallon tank.

My Brother in Law has the

Flo n' Go Duramax Gas Caddy — 14-Gallon

on his boat deck, he only has 1 boat out at a time

I use 6 gallon plastic Boat Jugs, i only fill to 5 gallons, plenty of expansion room, They lay flat, so they can Not tip over
They have a fill gauge & a vent, that can be closed or opened

For your purposes, i would use the upright can & a jiggler type syphon hose

1624831912962.png

This video is better
If you buy a shaker syphon with the glass ball, don't ever toss the ball in the trash can, just buy some more hose & put the shaker syphon in the new hose
At almost every hardware store, they will have some sort of self syphoning hose, they come in 3/8th, 1/2, 5/8ths & 3/4" sizes

I will tell you all, these make the greatest gifts for Do It Yourselfers

The price of new trucks are astronomical now. I could get about what I paid for my truck. But lose that profit on a new truck. Am 2 years out from paying this off. This trip will tell the tale if I’m keeping it until death do us part or upgrading though.

Bingo. I also use the harbor freight gerry cans. They come with the safety spot, but take a screwdriver under the red lock and pop it off. It still shuts it off, but you can have both hands on the can. I have 12 m4ilitary cans and get misplacing the damn clamp on spots haha. The HF cans use the standard threaded openings. This way if in the road and you misplace the spout, most places all them

Just like having multiple cooling fans, in case one breaks there is another.

If you travel a lot and If the 5th wheel in the bed allows for it I would go with something like this. Mounts over the wheel well Screenshot_20210628-104036_DuckDuckGo.jpg

Thats sweet. I have a short bed. Can you give me information on this? How many gallons? I picked up 2 5 gallon cans (already had one) today. 15 gallons backup should be plenty. Wish fuel places with dedicated diesel lanes would add a gas lane. I can only fill up on an outside pump due to length at regular lanes.

Unfortunately I found it by mistake while looking for something else. I remembered this thread about the cans and I screenshot it. I'll see if I can do a little scouring

I just completed a 5400 mile round trip from Az. to Pa. towing a 30 Ft bumper pull Toy Hauler. 2017 6.4 with 4.10 rears. I would have been happy with 9 MPG. I got anywhere from 5.6 to 8.5. That trip now has me looking for a larger fuel tank. Jerry cans would be ok for an emergency but I want something with either gravity feed or a pump. Stopping every 150 miles for fuel sure was annoying.

I was looking at the Titan over the wheel well tank trying to see if it would work in a 5'7" box, as there is not much space between the forward edge of the wheel well and the front wall of the box. Still don't have the answer but I did stumble across information stating they are for diesel only. I don't know why or if it is a big deal but that is what I read.

I haven't seen any tanks for gasoline from a manufacturer. It could be in bed gas tanks put off flammable gases that are a hazard. There are a few that go under where the spare tire mounts but who wants to have to haul a spare tire in the truck bed.

The tank itself will work for either fuel, but it can only be used as a transfer tank, no direct gasoline connection
