So ive always wanted big nasty bumpers for my truck ever since I got my first 4x4 in high school. But given the $2200 plus price tag of just a front bumper from all the big builders I did not think it would happen. Then last year I read about Road Rhino on a forum and figured id give them a look.

Well to my shock they had OPTIONS for how you wanted your bumper that can drastically drop the price for the consumer. The more work the individual is willing to do the cheaper their price will be.

Options:
WIY: weld it yourself, comes pre bent and cut. you just put the puzzle together, tac it, fit it, weld it, grind it, coat it.

Pre tac: its togeater so you cant screw up fitment. You just got to weld it, grind it, and coat it.

Welded: All welded together and grinded ready for coating.(dont know if you can get it welded but not grinded for cost reduction).

Additions: They also have other addictions you can add like front hitch and what not.

Wam Bam Thank you Ma'am: All ready to just bolt onto the truck. Coated and ready.

Luckily for my a had a few years of welding in High School and loved it. Havent welded since high school but a wire feed MIG is riding a bike. Just got to dive in. And I recently moved closer to some extend family, one who had a miller MIG, and some room for me to play.

So I put my order in with Road Rhino through their ebay email. And to my shock they can break down the bumper enough with the WIY kit that they can ship it with FedEx saving you $100 in shipping. Fright is needed for any other due to the dimensions and weight, which is $100 more then what FedEx charges for it broken down into 4 or 5 packages with the front and rear bumeprs and grill guard.

So I got the front and rear bumper with full grill guard. Bumpers came with 4 pocket cut outs for 4in PIAA lights, cutouts for winches front and rear, and two pockets in the rear for small rectangle lights also PIAA, oh and the rear works over your factory hitch. They have two tabs for lights for the grill guard but I wanted more. So I put a order in with ballistic fab for their tabs and some weld on skulls to help set me apart.

Processing and shipping was very fast. I however am slower. The shop I was working out of was 100miles away from where I live and I could only get to it weekend. Only took two busy weekend(busy with other things not just the bumpers) it get them ready for the powder coaters.

So we got to work:
Started with laying the pieces out to figure out where everything went. Started to tac the pieces together to help place some of the smaller pieces. Sorry no pics of that. When tacing them together you start with the middle piece and work out.

You can check fitment at this time if youd like. We did not and it worked out fine. Not as much adjustment as the instructions made it sound. Its a very very well made "kit". Hard to screw up IMO.

Then we started burning. Starting in one spot and moving around so one section does not get too hot. We would also take brakes when the gun started getting pretty hot.

You then end up with this and you can start grinding.

Then I added my skulls. They are just spot welded on.
IMG_0276.jpg

Time to get that old stuff off.

Get the old stuff off. Had to loosen the intercooler to get the front bolts out. They are tied together with a tab. Just took a little extra time but not a big deal.

The next part took some time. Get the bumper brackets welded up(easy). Loosely bolt then on the truck. TAC the bumper side brackets to the inside of the bumper. Get the bumper on the truck and check fitment. Make any adjustment needed for proper fitment. We did a little grinding on the passender side bracket for better fitment.

The grill guard comes in 4 pieces. Main hoop, 2 headlights hoops, and main hoop cross bar taced into place. I moved the cross bar down 1in to fit 3 9in ProComp lights. This must be fitted with the bumper on the truck. With the main bar on where you like it tac on each light hoop. Pull it all off for finale welding and grinding.

Once all back off its off to the powder coater. When I get it back and on it come out like this;

I love these bumpers! What did it really take to square the pieces up and tac together or do they line up pretty well?
Definitely on the list for once I graduate!

Its really well thought out. They come with little tabs to keep your spacing for you for the weld. Once you figure out what piece goes where its just a matter of putting them there. Some pieces we would use a clamp to get them perfect but that was it. Almost screw up proof I thought.

Front and rear base bumpers $795.00
Grill guard $300.00
Shipping $175.00
Powder Coat for everything $350.00
Extra light tabs $9.00
Skulls $4.00
Total: $1633 all in.

I got this before I was a RF member so whatever discount they give I did not receive.

Still a ton less then any others companies for just the front!

I did want two more things that they were unable to do. Rear tail light guards and a bumper mounted spare tire carrier. Some day when I get the tools ill probably add to these.

Im very happy with the size and beef of everything. I might make so minor alterations to the front at some point.

Your bumpers look awesome. I wish I knew how to weld. I'm like you, I love the bumpers but that almost $3k price tag for them (plus getting them color matched for me) is hard to swallow. I'm going to start asking around and seeing if somebody could weld it for me. What do you think is a fair price for a welder on the front and rear bumpers?

Thanks guys it was a really fun time. I never weighed the bumpers but I can move the rear around by my self pretty easy but the front I can barley move if one end in on a dolly. Im not a big or strong guy at 6' 2" and 170-175lbs.

MIG welding really is not hard after some practice and some guidance/information. If you spend the extra $200 for them to tack it together and shipping and all the guy needs to do is weld it, it should not be too much. Couple hours of work max I would think. Then you would have to grind it smooth and get it coated. So I guess it depends on what welders cause for an hourly rate, and that I have no idea. If you can get your hands on a welder and some scrap to practice with it would be worth it I think.

Thanks for the info. If I can find a friend who would be willing to do it (or teach me), I'll offer to buy them dinner. Lol

Sounds like a DIY kit is the most reasonable way to do replacement bumpers.

oh by far. I was super thrilled to see a company allow such a package. First ever as far as I know. Buy me a plane ticket and get a welder and im there!

if it was not for the affordability of the kit I would have only gotten a front bumper at this point.

I would have to think you would be ok learning to stick weld on them
It will take you awhile to clean them up though
Just keep moving around so things don't get to hot

depending on how fast you can pick it up. I know it took my some practice in high school to learn stick. MIG is soooo much easier, cleaner, and faster.
