So my wife thinks I'm nuts because I'm thinking about selling my '05 1500 to buy myself a first gen.
I can't help it though, I just love the looks of the first gen trucks! At one time I had an 86 Ramcharger that I loved, but sadly it was destroyed during a hurricane when a tree decided to lay down and take a nap on top of it. :-(
So am I crazy?

I don't think so. Depends though. Gotta look at family needs first. And you gotta make sure you're not getting rid of a decent truck for a heap of crap. If you find a good truck for a decent price I'd snag it up.

Yes and no.
I too love the first Gens.
The crazy part is selling your truck.
Keep it and just buy a first Gen. They can be had cheap.

No purchase is wrong if it is what you want. Even if it is a bad purchase.
But going from a 3rd Gen to a 1st Gen is just the right thing to do.
I enjoy my 2nd Gen but a 1st Gen has style all it's own.

No, you're not crazy. I love driving and working on my first gen. One downside might be the crappy gas mileage, my '85 gets 10 mpg on a good day lol.

Make sure it's reliable! Don't want to start having problems and nothing to fall back on.

I've been telling everyone here that when my truck dies I'm going backwards and getting a 2nd or 1st gen. These new trucks are nice and pumped full of features, but not realistic.

funny that you say that. I was talking to the wife about my retirement truck (I want a reg cab short box diesel once the kids are gone).. she said i should buy a vintage truck and just toss a modern drivetrain under it and keep a beater car for winter time.

A 4wd Cummins is what I'm looking at. If you keep a modern DT then buy one and do a custom build to remove the electronic crap.

I'd be looking at something like a 50's-60's truck body. The rest would be all new. hmm.. maybe i should start buying stuff now haha. pick up a crashed 4x4 and start tearing it apart.

It is hands down the best truck i have ever owned. Economy meter is sitting at 9.4L/100km, ive had it down to 7.9. it was 15.8 towing 8000lbs. My wife drives it more than i do because my commute is almost double hers so i get stuck in the civic (its cheaper to run then the ED).. We have put 33,000km on it since we got it new in sept 2014. Its been through cow/horse fields, towed wood, towed the camper, plowed snow, been full of dirt, and been used as the hockey mobile/grocery go getter. The truck feels solid, ive never felt a hessitation to pass a slow moving car, the few recals are a bit of an annoyance but to be expected when buying a first model year.

My only real complaint is the cost of the oil changes. No aftermarket oil filter; even with my discount its $213/oil change, it would be over $300 at the dealer.

Good to hear and it sucks for cost on general maintenance.
