I'm thinking of trading my Jeep for my buddys 13 1500 4x4 QC with Hemi.
It has the 20" wheels and I need to tow my 21' Ragen toyhauler with a weight of around 8-9000lbs and approx 1100 lb tongue weight.
I know the stock tires are not very good for towing heavy, but is there a good "E" rated tire in20"?
I can get a 17" towing tire but would have to swap the wheels.
Was 17" the other option for the 13 ram 1500? I so, I could probably find some takeoffs.
I also plan to install the Airlift 1000's.
My other consideration is the 2500 with 6.4 Hemi. I know this would be better for towing, but I can get a great price on the 1500 and it makes better daily driver.

The 2500 6.4 is also a great daily driver, rides smooth and comfortable. It will also be wayyyyyyyy better for towing your trailer. An 1100 pound tongue weight eliminates a lot of the half tons payload. The frame in the 2014 2500 is actually the frame from 2013 3500 DRW, it is very strong and better suited to tow that big trailer.

Yes the other option for the wheels is 17". How often are you planning on towing the toy hauler? If it is on a consistent basis step up to a 2500, if it is a couple times a year the 1500 will work. It is going to maxing out the payload if not going over it though.

2500 6.4 Hemi is an awesome truck. I use mine as a daily driver 98% of the time with a grin on my face 100% of that time. And when I'm towing the grin gets even bigger. I've had various trucks over the years from 1/2 ton gassers to powerful diesels, and towed everything from a pop-up to a 13,000# 5th wheel. The 2500 6.4 with my 8500# TT is by far the best setup I've ever had. The thing pull like a beast power wise and feels like a sports car compared to the other truck/trailers I've had. I couldn't even imagine going back to a 1500 series chassis.

Duratrac by goodyear is the best for the 17 option but they may only be a D. My trailer is only 6200 but thats a heavy toy hauler and would sag out a 4th Gen 1500 but thats a 3rd Gen owner opinion. Good luck getting it all good and safe for hauling your hauler. Danny

I've seen mixed reviews on that tire so far. Some people say it is the best tire they have ever owned, others hate it. I've seen a few people now say that the sidewalls are a little soft for towing, but all of that is subjective to every person.
I know I have the Wrangler silent armors on mine and they are the best tire I have ever driven on for snow ice and towing.

I have Duratracs. My trailer isn't very heavy and my Duratracs seem a bit squishy when towing. Great other wise. I just don't like them towing so much.

I wont put anything made by goodyear on my trucks. had too many blow up on me. Tried the duratrac mtr on my service truck for 2 months last summer. Had 6 blow up on the highway in that time. Went back to the old toyo M-55's after that. I have toyo At2's on the 1500 now and love them. have 275-65-20's on it now

I unloaded the duratracs as soon as I could once I found out just how bad they actually are for towing. I have run BFG ATs for years and will never stray from them again- I had a moment of weakness with the duratracs. I have the E load on my 20s and they are great all around, rock solid for towing and handle everything I throw at them.

Have any problems with those AT's picking up and throwing small stones and rocks at the front of your trailer?

I swapped out the 275 60r20 tires that came on my 2014 1500 for 275 65r20 10 ply. A lot stiffer ride than the 4 ply tires that came stock but will be better for towing a trailer. There are a lot of "LT" tires in the slightly larger size.

Make sure you have clearance for the slightly larger tire. I had leveled my 1500 so I had an extra 2" on the front. The only issue I had was some rubbing on the after market front mud flaps. That was easily resolved by cutting a little off the upper portion of the mud flaps.

I don't have any experience with GoodYear except my current GoodYear AT w/Kevlar tires (except 600 miles on crappy stock GY SRAs) and they have been nothing but fantastic with everything I can throw at them. The sidewalls are very stiff and they are smooth at high speeds. They don't bulge or get "squishy" at all under load.

I love Toyo's as well BTW. My previous Toyo M/Ts were great for a M/T.

My vote is for Michelins love those tires, they have improved ride and handling on every vehicle I have ever installed them on.

Not the cheapest tire but you get what you pay for.

On my last 3 trucks I have had LTX m/s2 on them.

I currently have them on my new Jeep Grand Cherokee ecodiesel.

Here is the info on 20" size I found on tire rack.

Michelin LTX M/S2 60,000 mile tire low rolling resistance for better mileage

275/60-20 $223.00 each at tire rack x 4 = $892.00

Size: P275/60R20
Sidewall Style: Blackwall
Serv. Desc: 114T is 2640 LBS per tire load range D & E available
UTQG: 720 A A

BFG All Terrain is an amazing tire ones I have 285/65R20 are load range E and I love them. If it was me I would consider the 2500 for those times when you want to haul whatever the hell you want. Mostly I can do anything I need with 1500 but I have definitely pushed it hard. It would be nice to have a 2500 and be easier on it. Trailer brakes and an incredible engine brake make the Ram very capable beyond rating if needed in a pinch.

smiley,

I agree the BFG KO is a great tire and can go 70,000.

I had a set on a 05 Titan but after 20,000 miles the road roar inside the cab got louder. I used that truck as my service vehicle and pulling 10k trailer for my business and spent many hours and miles listening to the roar while driving up and down the east coast.

Its a great tire but would not put on another set for mostly highway driving because of road noise.

Just my opinion.

OP

Towing that heavy I would go to the 2500 and avoid white knuckle moments trying to tow with lesser capable 1500. Remember you have to stop that weight and have control in heavy wind areas.

You will also need to equip a 2500 with some correct tow gear,as we are taking proper load range tires,WD hitch with sway control, good brake controller, mirrors, cameras on rear of camper for ease of travel, backing into camping spots, able to use camera going down the road to keep eye on traffic behind you passing, turning wide.

The thing I cannot stress enough YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for what you tow and those around you on the highway to be safe and in control of your vehicle at all times.

The Ram is underrated for towing as we know mostly due to sag and Ram being very strict on testing. Legally we understand the rating is what it is but it has the ability to handle more if needed here and there and I would not be worried. If I had choice and money was not a part of it I would do 2500 or larger so I was always well within the limits.
