Need help with winter tires

Hello i just purchase a 2016 Ram 1500 ecodiesel outdoorsman with 20" tires

275/60R20

The spare tire is

235/85R17

Ive found a good deal for 17" tire with mag and the spec is

265/70R17

IVe been told by my dealer that if i buy those tires that i will no be able to use my spare tire if i need to

Can someone tell me if that is true

He is mostly correct. The diameter of the 265/70R17 is smaller than the 235/85R17 although the difference is not huge.

But would it mater if i run on the spare if it's no the same diameter

If i have a flat on rear tire would it be better to send a front tire on the back and put the spare on the front ?

I'm thinking that it could damage the differentials at speed, but I'm not a engineer, mechanic, or expert.

yes as long you don't have anti-slip (LSD) in the back. I know it's a PITA but if I have a flat in the back I would use the spare on one of the front wheels and use that one for the back.

I took my 20's off and bought a set of 265/70R17 winters as well. I think the 17's are the stock size. Never even occurred to me about the spare. I have 2wd, personally I wouldn't worry about it, it's just like putting on one of those donut spares, just need to get you to the shop.
