Hey guys, just ended up trading away a 97 Escort Wagon for a 98 Ram 5.2L SLT Laramie extended cab 4x4 with 185.5K on her. She's got some bad rust holes on the wheel wells and lower door skins as well as rockers. Plan on removing the rust and adding big fender flares to cover the damage there. Best part - minimum coverage on the Escort cost MORE than the Ram, how does that even work?!

PO installed a new sway bar and track bar to fix the "Death Wobble" or so he claims. But I think it's still kind of there, as from 65-69 mph there's some very violent wobbling. Once you hit 70 it's smooth sailing though.

My list of things to do are as follows:

- Front shocks - PO said they're blown and boy is he right.

- Oil Change - Mobile 1 Full Synthetic

- Plenum Gasket - assuming it hasn't been done

- Transmission Shift Linkage Adjustment - when shifting into R or D I have to drop the shifter past the gear intended and then push upwards until I hit the gear needed; sort of frustrating

- U Joints Inspection/Pinion Bearing Inspection/Wheel Bearing Inspection - I'm getting a whirring/grinding noise from the front end only on deceleration (i.e. no throttle) from speeds 30 mph onward. After doing some major searching here and elsewhere online I've come to the conclusion it could be a Pinion Bearing up front or a U Joint some where (although I would assume the U Joint would make noise all the time not just on deceleration?)

- Transmission fluid drain and refill (W/ OLD FLUID) and filter change - the transmission shifts smooth and doesn't slip at all when changing gears. I'm assuming at this many miles it had to have been rebuilt once already. I'm hoping it was rebuilt and bulletproofed when done.

-Rear cab door latches. PO said the owner before him got fed up with the latches locking shut so he removed them (wtf?) so I need to find the right part for the latches on the doors and order and install those. Right now their held shut by a ratchet strap hooked into the top of the doors... :3681700201_eef6d1e2 Luckily he gave me the door panels for the rear with the truck so I don't need to find those.

- Neutral Safety Switch (?) - Sometimes I have to start the truck in neutral instead of park. I was told this is due to the neutral safety switch. Does this mean it's going back or it's doing its job?

Anything else you guys can think of doing? Other than that the truck is great. 4x4 engages with no clunks, the interior is really clean for its age and miles as well as NO DASH CRACKS.

Very excited to finally have a truck. I now have the best of both worlds - a lowered sports car and a full size pick up truck! :favorites13:

Double roller and water pump since you're already there. Plugs, rotor, dizzy cap too since the intake is out.
The wobble at 65ish, is it a wobble or a bounce? I know my truck bounces and it's due to the tires being out of balance

btw, Welcome Matthew.

Aside from adding the timing chain and water pump to the list can anyone comment on the issues I have currently?

Shifter issue, grinding/whirring noise, etc?

Shifter issue you'd need to climb under the truck and figure out. No getting around that.

Front end issue could be several things: hub, u-joints, low fluid level.

Is my assumption correct that its the linkage that needs adjusting to fix that problem?

I'll be having the shop look at my u-joints, hub, wheel bearings, and checking my pinion bearings while it's in later today.

Fingers crossed.

Aside from oil consumption is there any other way to tell if a plenum gasket is bad?

Excessive pinging and bad gas mileage. Sometimes you'll get good gas mileage due to the vacuum leak before it starts sucking in oil.

Read this if you haven't already

Will do.

Drivers side mirror is also cracked, the housing is fine but the mirror itself is broken. Is it easy to swap the heated mirror portion or am I better off just buying a new mirror housing with new mirror all together?

You can buy the glass but I don't know what's involved with replacing the glass.

Mine is cracked as well, but on the passenger side.

Found out I have the infamous exhaust manifold leak - ticking in my exhaust gave it away.

Anyone have this done by a shop before and have what they paid for it? Also, how much (if any) damage will it cause to drive the truck around with this going on?

Aside from that I just have to get brakes and possibly ball joints taken care of and she should be good to go!

Welcome to the forum.
For your shifter are you saying the indicator is off, or physically shifting it is off?

Agreed it could be a lot of things with the front end.

Other than that I hope you enjoy your new truck. And I hope the shop isn't screwing you. I do all my own work so I have no idea on prices.

Make sure to stop by the pictures thread in the 2nd gen section and post up some pics of the new ride. :)

The shifter is physically 'off' in it's shifting - I have to hit Netural with the indicator to get into Reverse and I have to hit Drive to get into Neutral and hit 2 to get into Drive.

Shop isn't screwing me too bad - the guy there owns a Ram 2500 and works on it frequently thankfully. I'd do the work myself if I have the tools and space to do so but I live in an apartment for the time being sadly and none of my friends places can house the Ram to work on.

I'll post up some pictures of her after she's have a few more things fixed up.

For now, here's a picture of my other car!

If I'm understanding that right, you move the shifter to where it's indicating the gear lower than you're in, then it's a simple fix. Under the steering column is the knee bolster. A few screws and it pops off. Then on the steering column you should see a little piece with a metal wire going to it. Not like electric wire. Its the wire that connects to the shifter. You get that off of the steering column and there's a gear in there you adjust to move the indicator. I wish I could go more in detail but it's been a while.

Also.. nice looking Genesis. 3.8 or 2.0?
