Hello. Have ordered a 2018 Tradesman 4x4 Regular cab 2500 6.4 Hemi with 4.10 gears. Told the truck should be built 1st week of July. Question I have is what oil will the manufacturer use. Wondering if synthetic will be put in at the factory. Have been reading much here but nothing regarding build oil. I assume it will be MoPar or Penzoil 0-40? Thanks.

It will be 0w40 syn. There is nothing special about the oil from the factory.

I just pick up a 6.4 yesterday and the manual specifically recommends Penzzoil Ultra 0w40 or equivalent meeting MS-12633. I don't see the factory using anything else from the manufacturing plant.

The manual states "The engine oil installed in the engine at the factory is a high-quality energy conserving type lubricant". But that's all it states about oil from the factory.

I don’t know what specifically comes from the factory, but there are basically only 2 oils that are “approved by Chrysler.” Amsoil signature synthetic and Pennzoil Ultimate Platinum in 0w-40.

I was surprised to see that, and honestly hard to believe with all the oils on the market. Fortunately both are amazing oils. I'll probably stick with the PUP since I got the maxlife waranty.

I have 14000 miles on my 2018 Power Wagon so far and have been using Castrol 0w40 made in Belgium since 500 miles. It may not be Chyrsler certified but it's a true group IV syn and the engine seems to like it a lot. I was getting it at Mallwart, but they stopped carrying it so I'm gonna order it from Amazon. At $24 for 5 quarts, it's seems the best bang for the buck. I'm averaging about 15mpg's combined these days (hand calc) and that's with the 4.10's.

I would also guess that they're using the Penzoil from the factory to answer the original ? :)

Yeah, Amsoil is about $9.50 per qt. around here. It kinda sucks. It actually costs more to do an oil change on this truck than it did with my 2006 Cummins. (I ran Rotella 15w-40 conventional oil in that one)

I bet a *** of cash that the factory does not put PUP 0W40 in it from the factory. It is most likely PGB or PYP as that is what they us in almost all of the factory fills.

PYB = Pennzoil Yellow Bottle
(Conventional)

PGB = Pennzoil Gold Bottle
(Semi Synthetic)

There's been BS with the oil for the 6.4 Hemi trucks right from the start. I got one of the very early trucks in March of 2014 and when researching oil there was a bunch of crap from Ram about endorsements and certain criteria for the correct oil. It was all 0W-40 but there was some certification BS and one brand was out and another was in. I have had every oil change at the dealership so I don't really pay too much attention. I did buy a jug of some "*******" 0W-40 to top off between changes but have barely used any.

If you dont live in am area were the weather requires 0w oils than dont use them. They are not necessary.

I run 10w40 in the summer and am gong to switch to 5w40 in the winter.

MDS will never know the difference.

I rumors/threats from Ram that if you used the wrong stuff you could get check-engine lights. I'm assuming you've never had that happen?

I did a lot of research on the internet concerning correct oils for my vehicles. Most testing showed using the correct weight is far more important than brand loyalty. I will always use the 0w40 synthetic but because of Pennzoil being hard to find in my area I use Mobil One.

I used the Mobil 1 last time I changed oil. It said for Porsche, VW, Audi, and something else. I used it anyway because it's 0W40 and no problem so far
