I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here, to be honest. Are you suggesting that the adoption of EVs is somehow hindering (or risking) human existence?
“ Practicality at this time is not advancing technology ahead of human existence . “

Some of the best engines of all time were I-6s. I for one am looking forward to it, big time.

For towing, yes. For the race truckers, not so much.
For those of us that still use as only a truck, I'm not too concerned. Trouble is the performance truck market became a huge % of the total, maybe even the majority of the market today.

I recall not long ago when Tesla just about went belly up because Musk didn't know how to manufacture mass production products. Somehow he got enough financing to survive - I think it was provided in exchange for him giving up sole control of his company? Anyway, this jonnie-come-lately startup is going through the same thing...

I actually saw one of these one the road 3 maybe 4 weeks ago. Interestingly enough it was at a gas station too, lol. It was smaller than I expected, but looks pretty nice. I hate the headlights, but the rest of the truck was really slick. The pass-through storage is wicked cool. And I'll be damned, it backing out and pulling away in total silence was eerily cool - though I know that triggers a large portion of the truck owning community.

Hopefully they figure things out. With the backing they have, I bet they will. They've got some real big fish, putting some real big money into their success.

I dunno - the thing looks like a giant cicada to me.

Looks like Ram is thinking about a range extender, gas generator.
This idea makes me so excited!

90% of the reason I bought the power wagon instead of waiting on electric truck was because I use the truck to take myself, and my family, off some pretty beaten paths. As someone with fuel anxiety already, having charge fear is not something I'm okay with in many instances; especially deep in to the mountains.

This will essentially completely negate that. Especially if it's capable of generating a pretty significant amount of charge.

Still wouldn't work for everyone, in every use case, but it'll work for an incredibly large amount of people more than straight EV. What a killer stepping stone.

And it's something we talked about here early in this thread! Maybe they are reading are commentary. ;)

Isn't that what we call a hybrid?

Generally, hybrid means both the electric and gas/diesel motor can directly power the drive train. "Full hybrid" means they can both drive the vehicle independently, "mild hybrid" means the electric is primarily ran in tandem with the gas to assist it, but doesn't independently power the vehicle for any substantial time.

In this set up, the generator can never directly power the drive train. While the semantics could be argued, it's not a hybrid in how the term is currently used.

You nailed it for me with this post. My sentiments exactly. I think this is the first of your posts that I fully agree with. :) Well stated. I said earlier in this thread that I'm willing to consider some sort of plug in hybrid, but no way would I consider a fully electric vehicle. Even though this wouldn't really fit the hybrid definition, it's close enough for me. And I'd definitely consider one for commuting, and for the trips we take to other areas of the country. And since I don't tow or haul much of anything, having the extra weight and losing a little bed space wouldn't bother me.

Electric vehicle with a "Range extender" is something that the marketing department at GM came up with to try and make the Volt sound like an EV. In my books it was a hybrid.
"Hybrids that use a series drivetrain only receive mechanical power from the electric motor, which is run by either a battery or a gasoline-powered generator. In hybrids with parallel drivetrains, the electric motor and internal combustion engine can provide mechanical power simultaneously".

I'd argue it's largely a battle of semantics, truly. I don't care what they want to call it. I just want it to actually perform well. If I can get, say I don't know, 500-600 miles from an initial full charge plus a few gallons of fuel, I'd be pretty happy.

What I'd hate to see is a ~300 mile range, that requires both.

it seems to me, you would need to take solar panels out of a suitcase & lay them on your roof

Everyone says that a solar house can't function after 3 or 5 days of cloudiness, then at that time they have to start up the generators or plug into the power grid.

The Gas & Electric Company here has raised their rates for Solar Powered homes to be connected to the electric grid, even if they never have to use electricity from the power grid.
It used to be something like $5 per month, now it is at least triple that

Living in UT, and spending a lot of my free time in the back country, I have always filled up my vehicle before heading in because as you can imagine there aren't any gas stations out there. I'm curious why you seemingly can't understand that you theoretically could do the same thing with an EV. Yes, running out of charge would be marginally more of a hassle to deal with if you ran out of charge, as you'd likely need to be towed out instead of having someone bring you in fuel. But those are both scenarios you'd want to avoid in the first place, especially in the places I tend to find myself, as you won't be making any bail out phone calls anyways.

But yeah, for like the 50th time in this thread, there are plenty of examples of where an EV wouldn't be the best option in it's current state. Beyond attempting to adding to that list, I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at.

I wouldn't want to take a Honda Civic across the Sahara, just the same as I wouldn't want to take any current EV into The Maze for two weeks, just the same as I wouldn't want to take a F-450 into Manhattan for vacation. Doesn't mean much beyond that.

California's Governor just allotted major $$$ for charging stations

That means that they are going to force land owners to sell land

My brain is spinning :(

If they install a charging station along the highway
Someone will demand that a rest area with seating & tables & of course Internet be included
And maybe a Starbucks drive thru service? Lol
