Hello all! Going to need new tires before the “White-stuff” starts to fly here in NE Ohio. Currently running Michelin ( something or other) that were on the truck when I purchased it in late March. It is a 4x4 if that makes any difference. As I have been told,Michelin are a hard-compound tire. They last long but you pay more $ and the vehicle rides rougher than other brands. I had Goodyear Assurance on the wife’s Pacifica and it rode like a dream but terrible in the snow. I understand that I can’t compare a Pacifica to my Ram, I just don’t want buyer’s remorse again! I would like an all-purpose that is sufficient for most any type of weather, I also do not do any off-roading. Does anybody know what type/brand I should look into?? Thanks in advance!

When I lived in the Snowy North, Lake Superior, I had a set of 20” wheels and General Grabber winter tires to swap on. Less than $1200 of if I remember for four basic entry level wheels and then the tyres from Discount. Still unfortunately own them! Not something I can sell easily in North Carolina lol.

Check out Kenda's
It is all I ever used on my dirt bikes, and since I know they make em for trucks it is all I've ever used on my trucks...and I plow with them

I'm trying nokian hakkapellita lt3 studdable winter tires this year.the load rating isn't great but I will only be towing a snowmobile trailer all winter,no boats,no travel trailer.i used my ridge grapplers last winter.they were OK,but not great.i ran the stock dura crap tires the first winter I had the truck and promptly sold them the next spring.where I am we have to have winter rated tires on by Oct.1.I was looking online for some reviews and some of the recommended tires are stupid.most of them are all terrain tires.great if you can't afford a set of snow tires,but bfg all terrains on an ice packed road is a death waiting to happen.I'm on my eighth truck with an average of 3 sets per,so I've tried a lot of different brands and applications and all terrain tires in snow suck,plain and simple.I live pretty rural so we don't see a plow for days after a snowfall and by the end of winter our street alone has a very thick layer of compacted ice.

lets also not forget tire size

on an 18X8 wheel (just an example) you could go as narrow as a 265 or as wide as a 305
if you could find a tire that is available in 265/75 -18 as well as a 305/65-18, those two tires would be virtually identical in diameter but the 265 would be better in snow

I don't know what size LT3's you are looking at but they are all 3000 pound plus capacity.
This is what will be going on my "22" 2500 this winter;

LT275/70 R 18 125/122Q

max load 3640 lb, up to 100 mph

so 7280 pounds is more then the axles are rated for.

Michelin Defender LTX from Sam's Club. Best riding tire ever in any truck I have ever had over 40+ years. Smooth, quiet, fantastic in snow and rain, and dry pavement not noisy.

the tires are a 285/70/17 121,load range d 8 ply tire.i wouldn't be caught dead pulling anything bigger than my side by side trailer,let alone carrying anything in the box.

So

So an axle loading 6400 pounds at up to 100 mph isn't suffice?

Edited to add;
Even a 3500 SRW only has a 7000# axle rating and an interesting tidbit is what are your wheels rated at?

I just swapped my 35/12.5/17 ridge grapplers for my nokians.you would think the ridge grapplers would be marshmallows compared to the much smaller and thinner nokians but it's the exact opposite.the nokians are very soft and the ride difference is very noticeable compared to what it says on paper.real world difference.it is what it is.

Well got my new studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3 snow tires mounted on my new rims, got the tires yesterday the rims a month or so back and TPMS sensors a week ago.
winter wheels and tires 1.jpgwinter wheels and tires 2.jpg
An expensive little package, tires $1432, wheels $900, TPMS sensor $190 and shinny center caps $70.
But she's ready for winter for the next 2-3 years at least. I hope.

Second this!!!

I run the Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires and they are phenomenal!
Plus, they have an excellent warranty, too.
