Hello,

So I just bought my first Dodge Ram Hemi '10 (75,000 miles)and I am not too familiar with it yet. I looked it over and see nothing leaking or out of sorts, it drives great as well.

So I have 1 month left on factory warranty, is there anything I should look closer at and maybe get fixed? I have the option of getting an extended warranty to cover me for the next 4 years or 45,000 miles for 30$ a month, is this a good idea?

Truck has a magna flow system, k&n drop in filter, short term plan is to change the plugs and fluids, add bilstein 5100 shocks, new tires (torn on keeping factory 17s or going to factory 20s), and a programmer,(looking for mild tune and ability to adj for tire size, not go crazy).

Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.

If you're looking at warranties do some research outside of the dealer you bought from. You can buy warranties from any dealer and you'll usually save big time over what the finance guy at your dealership is offering.

Make sure it's a MOPAR/RAM genuine warranty. Aftermarket warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on. The exhaust shouldn't be a problem but the K/N intake may void some warranty stuff.

the warranty is actually offered through cuna mutual and my credit union, a brief internet search hasnt turned up anything damning on them other than the general "all extended warranties are bs". this is a good point though, i didnt consider aftermarket upgrades and there effect on warranties. thanks.

Auto Services Company, Inc. - Refusal to honor warranty, Review 348534 | Complaints Board

Check this out..... this is the EXACT type of BS that aftermarket warranties are famous for. Splitting hairs about what is actually broken. Run Forest, run :)

Their other trick is to just go out of business (change names) every few years to leave everyone with an existing SOL.

Go factory or forget it.

haha, thats one i actually read when looking for info. there is an article on consumer reports that says about 51% are happy they did it, it goes up to 63%. they also have a great suggestion, put the money(about 1200$) in an interest bearing account, then the money is there if you need it and if you dont you can use it for something else if you want. My experience with warranties is limited, when i did have one a trans am, it was well worth it. i am only considering it now because i am clueless about the dodge and its reliability or other issues

I'm in the same situation. Bought my first ever Ram not really knowing about the gen 4 reliability, only researched about how they were well built and were on the rise as far as customer satisfaction goes.

I went with the Chrysler warranty and it definitely gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that I have it.

Just in case!

So is it better to wait until the last few months that your factory warranty is still in force to buy the extended warranty? I found a factory extended lifetime warranty for $2300 if I went with the 7 year 120,000 mile warranty it only saved $200... But it is transferable (one time) so should help sell it when the time comes, the lifetime warranty is not transferable.

You didn't say how many months you had to pay for the warranty. I have a credit card that I never use and just keep it in the safe. So instead of spending the money on the warranty. I won't need it for the power train because I get rid of them at a 100k miles.

After market warrantys

Beware of the after market warranty. Only once did I ever consider and or get one. Sure got an education. Had a broken oil pump drive stem. Happened in my driveway as wife was pulling out. Shut off engine immediately, checked oil level and then restarted to confirm that was showing no pressure. Shut off immediately again. Called dealer where I purchased car and warranty. Note, engine has made no noise. Had it towed and after a diagnosis, was told oil pump shaft broken AND that it showed evidence of coolant in the oil. Level was up when purchased and still on full when towed in. So, I told them to get it fixed as had warranty. Then, they wanted me to sign a release stating that if warranty didn't cover the repair that "I" would be responsible????? Wont go farther but things got worse from there. 3 weeks later, they finally repaired the vehicle. Didn't find or repair a coolant leak. Hummmmm (note, I had still not signed the release)That was my experience. Ps. They don't usually use OEM parts ether. Things to ask and read in the small print.
