no muffler

I just bought a 2013 express regular cab and the previous owner left the cats and resonators but welded a straight pipe in place of the muffler. Should I put a muffler on? I didnt buy the truck to get good mpg but im only getting 12 in the city and maybe 18 freeway. Is this normal or could it be that it needs a muffler for a little back pressure?

that is normal, if you like the sound, leave it, many chose to do muffler delete as these trucks are quiet, adding a muffler wont do much for mpg or performance

Thanks for the info. It does sound really nice so I wouldn't want it any quieter. Completely lost in regards to newer car performance.
