OK, this is going to sound really dumb, but...

Is there a newer OBD port on the newer vehicles? And when I say newer, I mean OBDIII (3)? I know the OBDII (2) ports are on most vehicles since 1996 or so, but, I have a coworker that has mentioned OBDIII (3) a couple times in discussions. Now, I haven't looked at my truck to verify, but it got me thinking... maybe it's a newer version that has come out. I haven't found anything with a Google search about a newer version, but I'm just curious. Maybe it's on certain vehicles? :baby:

I have a couple of gauges that are OBDII (2) that monitor vehicle performance with something like 86 different readings (depending on the vehicle). I had them installed in our Land Rover Discovery's to monitor engine temp. I'm just wondering if I can switch them over to the 2014 RAM and the 2013 Durango, now. Granted, the EVIC in both can give me most of that info already, but it is another "gadget" that I can play with.

This is what I have: UltraGauge OBDII Scan tool & Information Center It's a great little gadget to keep an eye on things, and will read codes and clear them. It can be programmed for a number of different readouts. I know there are cheaper options out there, but I already have 2 of these, so I thought I could use them for the fun of it, if they will work.

OBDIII does not exist yet, as far as I know.. the scan tool you have should work as OBDII is standardized and all those tools do is search for sensors and displays their output. Some get different output than others as technology changes between manufactures, but generally speaking it's a standard. These trucks have a CANBUS which is a close area network (CAN) that relays information from sensors to modules and actively monitors, and controls them through the BCM. As for OBDII it is separate, OBD is for engine diagnostics, it taps into your ECM to view what sensors are reading what and how they are performing, because of the OBD standard this information cannot be encrypted (much). The CANBUS tho is a whole nother story..

OK. At least I'm not going crazy. Thanks for the re-iteration of what I had thought. I might try my UltraGauge out and see if it will sync up to the truck. :)

Canbus is the newest standard. I have a feeling that the next step will be more towards wireless diagnostics as Chrysler was doing it back in 2009 when I worked in a shop.

Got my mounts in for my UltraGuage and got it mounted this evening. Plugged it in and recalibrated it for the Hemi and everything works great. Got my initial setup done. The pics are a little dark, but they'll work for now.uploadfromtaptalk1447204979673.jpg
