So I decided after 90,***+ miles to finally clean my throttle body after taking off my inlet tube to change my plugs and noticed some build up within. Figured it would be a good idea because I've noticed my throttle response has been kinda laggy lately.

Upon taking the tb off, I noticed what looks like oil on the intake side of the butterfly. So I took my flashlight and took a peak in the intake manifold and noticed oil everywhere.. very wet, very noticable. There were a few small pools of what looks to be oil, but none the less, the whole inside is covered in this crap.

Has anyone else ever noticed this? Can tell me what this is, or if it's normal? I would like to think that it's not, but with all the tech going into vehicles these days.. I thought it was some kind of system set up by dodge to lubricate something in the heads or upper cylinder, because there is a plastic pipe that runs from the rear passenger side of the motor to the very front of the intake, just below where the tb is mounted. Maybe a small amount of oil is pulled into this tube by way of vacuum and placed into the intake by design?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Dont want to hassle with the dealer just yet. I know how they can be with brushing stuff like this off and claiming it's normal. I'm hoping ya'll can give me some fire power in case I have to pay them a visit.

Thanks!

Normal and this is the reason folks install a catch can in the PCV circuit.

It's common for the HEMI to "blowback" some misted oil into the system and eventually back to the intake.

Here's my 6.1L powered HEMI's catch can after less than 3K miles:

If I am driving it hard I'll have about 1/2 a can in there at 3K miles.

Ok good. The word normal is a good thing. Thanks.

So I suppose I should probably look into installing a catch can. Pretty simple mod? I don't like the idea of my intake being covered in oil.

Clean the intake, clean the throttle body then put on the can.

Easy mod. It just goes into the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) circuit hose. Also, if you have a small hose going from the valve cover to the air intake tube, you will want to eliminate that open end of the air flow path.

Then just empty the can as part of your routine oil changes.

You are welcome. I'm sure there are some install threads here specific to your year truck and engine you can check out.

Good deal. Thanks for the enlightenment!
Do not use Throttle Body Cleaner on your throttle body--it has a strong potential to short it out.

Use brake cleaner on a rag and keep the electronic end dry. You can use whatever you want on the intake--some guys will even suck sea foam through, but a good solvent in moderation and lots of clean rags ought to do it.

A BT Catch Can will take about 15-20 min. to install: remove air cleaner hose, remove PCV line to TB, install one bolt to block to hold Catch Can and bracket; install two hoses, reinstall air cleaner hose--done!.

Quick question on the cleaning of the throttle body...I have 27k miles on mine and I'm just inspecting it. Should I take it out and clean it, or should I just leave it in, and just reach in with a toothbrush and rag and wipe it down?

I'm just asking because I'm not too mechanically inclined here but I'm willing to learn. I know that when I removed the cold air intake, and I looked at the throttle body, I just turned it just to see if I can see and feel oil, and there was quite a bit on the other side of the throttle body.

Haha...if it helps any, my truck still runs like a dream. Not saying it's a must have, just saying that I would rather clean it myself because I can spend $200+ on other stuff for my truck..lol
