For those who have replaced their PCM's. Can PCM's from the the same model and year be swapped in and out without being flashed to the same VIN? I want to have a backup PCM for a custom flashed PCM and am wondering if I need to have the junkyard backup flashed or can I just plug it in to use.
Thanks,

I think as long as there is a VIN in there it doesn't matter. That's my understanding, but I come from the days of bigger carbs and turning the distributors.

yeah, you will need it flashed for your truck, needs to contain your vin, and your mileage. a dealer can do it, but itll cost a pretty penny. most mechanics can do it for less i would imagine. i bought one from solopcms online, gave them my vin and mileage, they sent it off already flashed and ready to go.

I went a head and bought the junkyard pcm and we will know if it'll work or not. My local dealer is completely incompetent. I wouldn't trust them to air the tires.

If you don't get it vin flashed, it won't communicate with your cluster and you'll be SOL.

Well, I guess I'll need to get the junk yard PCM reflashed with my VIN. Switching back and forth there will be a mileage discrepancy, Hopefully that won't be a problem.
Thanks,

That will be a problem.

Is it just a back up in case your custom pcm gets fried? You could get a cluster and a pcm both flashed and then you wouldn't have an issue. More **** control from chrysler....

I know folks like Solo wants the VIN and mileage for the PCM flash, and I thought I read someplace the mileage was also stored in the CCM. But didn't know the PCM wouldn't update the CCM. So what you are saying I need to match the CCM with PCM. I have never heard reflashing a CCM for a match. Not sure what I'm going to do as my dealer can't get anything right. Any ideas?

Clusters go out all the time and get reflashed. I don't even think it needs to be the dealer that flashes it.

i guess I'll just keep it in standby and flash it when and if I need it. Nothing is easy it seems.
