It’s been a while since I had a 2nd gen, but if I remember correctly, there is a way to test the plenum gasket.

With the engine warm, disconnect and plug all of the vacuum lines. Start the engine, and remove the oil fill cap. Put your hand over the oil fill hole.
If pressure starts to build, the plenum gasket is good. If suction develops, the gasket is bad.
