1) 2013-2015 RAM
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V460000
"Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks manufactured June 20, 2012, to January 26, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the side impact sensor calibrations may be overly sensitive, and as a result, the side air bag inflatable curtains and seat air bags may unexpectedly deploy and the seat belt pre-tensioners may activate."
"...Occupant Restraint Control (“ORC”) module side impact calibration updates were implemented in September and November of 2014, after an FCA US Engineering fleet vehicle exhibited a side airbag inflatable curtain (“SABIC”) deployment as a result of a high-G door slam. The calibration updates were implemented as a product improvement in vehicles manufactured after these dates. The root cause was determined to be overly sensitive pressure and acceleration side impact thresholds, resulting in the ORC module commanding deployment without a vehicle impact."
"Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the Occupant Restraint Control module calibration, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Chrysler's number for this recall is R23.
2) 2012-2014 RAM
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V459000
"Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks manufactured January 18, 2011, to October 7, 2014, and equipped with the Electronic Vehicle Information Center option. The affected vehicles have a steering wheel wiring harness that may rub against the driver air bag module retainer spring."
"...vehicles with Electronic Vehicle Information Center (“EVIC”) are equipped with a B+ terminal whereas vehicles without EVIC are not. All vehicles with inadvertent deployment due to steering wheel wiring abrasion were equipped with EVIC."
It appears that the electrical connections for EVIC cause rubbing leading to a short that can discharge the air bag.
The recall is expected to begin September 19, 2015. Chrysler's number for this recall is R36.
