Ratchet strap tail retention.

Personally, I’ve tried all kinds of ways. Mostly what I haul is Large slabs and logs. This video is not me but demonstrates a popular way to retain the remaining strap. I have had this fail and come undone before… more than once..

Here are a few pictures of how I do it when hauling my most frequent type of load. I simply roll the strap up in a big loop and slide it under the strap before fully tightening. Then sinch it down.
It has never failed me. But there are times that it’s difficult to find the appropriate spot (flat slabs) that will retain the roll. But as I said, it has never once failed me, but I don’t think this will work great for everyone.

Just moved my dad last weekend. Had the bed and small trailer full. Only a 70 mile trip but I like to make sure nothings going anywhere. I actually used zip ties. Just make sure you have snips with you of course, but I have a pair in my toolbox that lives in the truck. I also have a couple straps that have a little velcro loop at the end, it works pretty good. Last resort is trying to stuff the strap ends in between pieces of cargo and hope they don't fly loose (they always do right?!)

After spending a few years driving OTR no way would I ever trust a ratchet strap, I know many use them, me I saw parts of a few loads fall off a flatbed trailer that had been using them so for me its a hard NO

No I used 30k rated 4 inch webbed straps with a different type of hook on one end, the plain end was inserted to a decanted steel winch ( similar to the photo below) I can say I bent a few weak trailer side rails along with portable winches when using a cheater bar on the end of the winch bar .

Thats neat. I like it.

I keep a few sizes of spring clamps in the truck. I take the tail of the strap, fold it up, and clamp it back to the tensioned strap.

I just tie the tails back to some stretched part of the strap with a clove hitch knot. Works fine but my loads are minor by comparison and usually have brakes. I like the spring clamp idea above.

This is actually a neat way. I can see it being a great option for me as the roll can lay on the flat bed.

So long as they are short enough that they wont make their way off the side of the trailer.

At a very minimum i need 3,000lbs working load. I dont see that they make them that big?

Erickson is not the only manufacturer, Mytee also has them, more commercial oriented. I have not seen any bigger so you're probably out of luck for that working load.

Personally if I have to use a strap it has to have a minimum of 10000 lb. Breaking Strength, I have seen the damage when people use the wrong or undersized breaking strength straps....

The 3,000 lbs working load straps have a 10,000 breaking.

i actually have 1 of the same straps (3,000 working 10,000 breaking) that the ratchet got damaged. So for years iv been using the strap from it to skid big logs . Works great.

Something is off, according to the limits printed at the above link (copy of photo below.) as I read it, it can't handle anything more than 3300 lbs max (I assume 3300 breaking) with an 1100 lb workload limit. I also should have written mine as a 10K workload not 10K breaking, my bad. Just read the specs on the strap"
