Personally, I’ve tried all kinds of ways. Mostly what I haul is Large slabs and logs. This video is not me but demonstrates a popular way to retain the remaining strap. I have had this fail and come undone before… more than once..

Here are a few pictures of how I do it when hauling my most frequent type of load. I simply roll the strap up in a big loop and slide it under the strap before fully tightening. Then sinch it down.
It has never failed me. But there are times that it’s difficult to find the appropriate spot (flat slabs) that will retain the roll. But as I said, it has never once failed me, but I don’t think this will work great for everyone.

This magnetic ratchet strap is brilliant!
this Ratchet strap with a magnet on the J hook is brilliant! What a game changer.
