Hello everyone!

I'm new to this forum and I am seeking a new ram to haul my horse and just be my new truck!

I am not new to owning a truck however Ive never bought a brand new one!

I've narrowed down the truck I want but I'm unsure of what a good price is.

I'm looking at a Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. Leather seats, tow package, rhino lining, and a leather bed cover.
It has all the bell and whistles for the most part(no air ride suspension though)
its sticker price is 52.850 and the guy instantly dropped it to 42k.

He dropped the price so fast I'm not even sure if I should haggle more or just take the deal.

Any input work be greatly appreciated thanks so much :))

yes, 10k is pretty normal,

you can wheel and deal and mabye get up to 12k off

the best thing is to signup for the treadlightly club whatever, that guarantees you 1% off listed invoice price,

then you get all the other Ram promotions on top of that.

but starting at 10k off listed price is not bad, you can definitely get more if you wait, not sure if its a leftover 14 or new 15, but im sure dealers are trying 2 clear out inventory since you can already order 2016

My question is more on the use side from my own experience with hauling horses. If you have a 2 horse trailer then no problem with a 1500. if you have a 3 horse trailer then you need a little more truck in my opinion. What do you haul them for, rodeo, pleasure riding etc ?

I had a 07 CTD that I used to haul a 3 horse bumper pull with 2-3 horses at times and also used it for a 4 horse gooseneck hauling horses for roping events and such all over the state, with that I wouldn't suggest anything less than a 2500. If its just local pleasure riding and not hauling more then 2 horses than a 1/2 may get you buy.

Just look at your trailer weight + 2 horses will prob put you somewhere around 6-8k trailer weight. and are you looking at 5.7L hemi or Eco Diesel... lots of options depending on your need/use

Thank you!!

I was thinking I wanted 12k off the sticker when I was doing research about pricing.

He just dropped it before I even sat in the truck so I didn't even know where to start haha.

I will be hauling a 2h slant. Trailer+horse will be around 3k. I only have 1 horse. Maybe I might haul for a friend sometimes and her horse is about 1100.

I just ride for pleasure. :))

Edit:
It's a 5.7 Hemi

Maybe instead of dropping the price, get him to throw in some things the truck doesn't have, like step bars, window tint or some other MOPAR accessory.

You might want powered tow mirrors if the truck doesn't have them now which will come in real handy towin' that trailer!

Have them add some things to the deal for the dropped price. There's value there you can use.

edit:
I lied it doesn't have the side bars. Oops!
I could look to adding a couple things

This is the truck.

Today I called 1 other dealership to see if I could pit them against each other. We'll see where that gets me.

I really like this truck so fingers crossed. I don't mind waiting a little longer though.

Ask them to throw in wheel-to-wheel side steps into the price. Looking at the window sticker the truck has every option that comes on the Sport! I've been looking for a Sport with exactly the same options as this one (even the same color). I'd buy it tomorrow at that price if Washington wasn't so far from Colorado.

I feel like 10k off MSRP with side steps included is a very fair deal. You could hold out for more $ off the sticker but ask yourself how you'd feel if it sold to someone else. I played hardball with a dealer last week (wanted 12K off MSRP) and the truck sold while I was being stubborn.

when going that route it's best to get their offers in writing so you can show it to the next dealer

i LOVE to haggle with dealers. what most dont realize is a dealer can "loose" money on the deal because they get a hold back from chrysler. just a few weeks ago i was able to get my 49.9k msrp laramie for 35.5k. also keep in mind that if you have good credit the apr is negotiable also. my dealer called the banks after they had me at a 2.2 and got it to a 1.7apr.

also keep in mind that on some dealer websites you have to read the fine print some will advertise one price, but you have to qualify for like 15 different rebates to get that price (in reality 99% of people would be paying 2-3k more than their advertised price.

I like to haggle as well! It's a fun game to play. In my area it completely depends on the individual dealership and how bad they need to sell trucks. I found a 2015 Sport CC (loaded) advertised for 10K off MSRP. Asked them to throw in a spray in bed liner and side steps and we'd have a deal....they agreed. Then they tried to low ball my trade. I asked for Blue Book value and they refused. I walked out and they let me walk out. No calls, no emails etc. They let me walk out when we were minutes from closing a deal. I couldn't believe it.

Also if you'll be hauling the trailer often check what gears it's running (preferably the 3.92's) and go with the 8spd. Haven't done any towing but have hauled some loads and would have liked more gears.

I'm guessing this truck has 3.92 gears? I hope it does for towing sake. You'll be a lot happier with it.

Just for reference, my '14 Big Horn was stickered at $48K, and I got it for $35.5 when we made our deal. This was the first week of December, though. So, they were a little more willing to deal... and, I drove 4.5 hrs to get it.

Well with that you should be good. just get the package you want and the 3:92 rear gears like suggested. Sounds like you know how to buy a vehicle and deal with sales peoples.
